Max possible RAM

Before any of you ask, i have used the search button, and no results were displayed.
ok. i have 1GB of ram in my system and i am looking to increase it. the question i am asking is what is the maximum you should increase it to? my pc is currently running on Windows XP. i have carried out a pc check on www.crucial.com and it says i can have 8GB. now i obviously dont need that, so if you could answer with reccomendations, it would be much appreciated.

2gb. Be fine for another 1 & 1/2 years. After that you might think of upgrading to 3gb - 4gb (Especially when you have Vista)

my current 1GB of RAM is in the form of a 2x512Mb kit, does this have any benefits over a 1GB?

Things to note:

That stuff in the link is DDR2, you sure you have DDR2 and not DDR1 right?

Plus, to run in dual channel mode, you want matching pairs. Seeing as you already have 2x512mb, i would get another set of 2x512mb. however, in order to make future upgrades easier, you might want to sell your current 2x512mb, and buy a 2gb set comprising of 2x1gb sticks.

yeah ive got DDR2. i only bought my PC around 9 months ago. i might look at doing that then. how much would i be likely to get for my old 1GB kit then?

ive heard that XP only reads up to 3gb of ram even tho i think u can have up to 4gb , but xp wont read it

but then again...i dont kno if this is 100% right, but i think u can have like unlimited amount of ram, except it cant be used like memory, it can be used as storage another harddisk or something like that

something liek that i think,32 bit only utilizes 3 i think?while 64 bit can use 4?im sure someone more knowledgeable will post.

Windows xp pro will see about 3.25 Gigs of ram if you are using 4 gigs.

I'm sure you can configure XP to use 4gb rather than 3gb. There's a switch in boot.ini that definitely works on 32-bit Windows Server products so may work on XP too.

Yea, there are ways to get XP to read 4gigs, but i don't think its as easy as the details given in that link.

All mobos support 4gb, well all relatively modern ones.

And, memory speeds up loading up until a point, and after that it depends on the speed of your hard disks.

I have two 80gb SATA2 8mb in RAID 0 and im always in servers first. I can usually take the first flag before anyones spawned!

Well 4k Gigs man..You wont be able to see who won the round! I wish my pc was as fast as that.
