P5N-E isn't a bad choice at all. As it turns out, the "handicapped" implementation of SLI isn't that handicapped by current PCI-E standards at all.

Honestly, if you aren't really considering buying 2xexpensive gpu's (and running them in SLI), I'd have chosen a p965 chipset. Even something like a gigabyte ds3:

OP--you should be very happy with the board. Just READ THE MANUAL. There's actually a good amount of stuff in there that is very helpful. Then again, my P5B-E manual says that you should install dual-channel ram side-by-side, when it's really in the same color slots...
...so you kinda have to take some thing with a grain of salt. :)Comment

The link below is a thread dating back to day 1 of the introduction of the Asus P5B mobo. It details every single problem you might encounter during the build, or overclocking.
Do keep in mind that many of the initial problems have been solved with a newer BIOS...which WILL already be included in the mobo you receive.
If you have a problem, you will find the answer spoken about in that thread, followed up on, and even revised/improved in some cases.

Ram seems to be the #1 issue. Though most of those problems were from having only 1 stick good, 1 stick bad...not the mobos fault.
If you encounter early troubles just booting, try the ram sticks one at a time to determine if one or both are bad before pulling hairs out from your head.Comment

Read thread. My input on p5b-e (owner) is that 2x1gb buffalo firestix ddr800 5-5-5-15 run at boot on p5b-e. They default to ddr 667 and require bios input to run at proper speed. Well, as a P5B-Deluxe owner, i cn remember quite a lot of issues relating to RAM. However, the majority of these problems were fixed in later BIOS's. I know have 2gb of OCZ running at 956mhz (Won't go any higher :-( )at 5-5-5-15. Im looking to upgrade to either a set of G.Skill's, Crucial Ballistix (Using Micron D9's (**** yeah!) or some Corsair Dominators.
For overclocking the 1004 bios is probably your best bet as the one after that won't accept higher FSB values such as 370 - 380mhz. One thing to note is that if your setting up a RAID, then those drives must be plugged into the red SATA plugs and not the black ones. This had me confused for about 1 week!Comment

Thanks for all the replies guys, really appreciate the heads-up's and links to the ASUS stuff. I'll have a good read.
As for the GPU, I had a budget of £500 for all the kit that I really wanted to stick to. I was tempted to get quicker CPU, tempted to get quicker GPU, tempted to get more RAM (I'll be using VMWare quite a lot on the machine), but where do you stop?!
If I find I want more performance, I can buy one or two GFX card some time in the future and Ebay the other one.
Looking forward to getting some decent BF2 resolutions. Just about to order FEAR too. And Flight Sim X :pComment

2gb and E6300 is plenty enough to run VMware. But then again i only ran multiple instances of Linux which isnt resourse hungry unlike XP or Vista. Don't know what they require to emulate successfully.

Yeah, I know what you mean about knowing where to stop. I spent about $2000 US on my machine counting the monitor, keyboard, mice, external HDD, speakers and headphones, joystick, and gamepad. The upside is that I'm never buying a PS3 or X360. BF2, Oblivion and F.E.A.R. rock on this box at around 60 fps at 1600x1200 with everything maxed out.
The lame thing is the fact that soon after I built this rig Core 2 Duos came out and I could have gotten a much better system for the same price or less. The price I pay for being an early adopter, I guess.Comment
