if you buy all the parts from 1 place, they will generally post everything together & notify you if something has gone out of stock asking if you want to change it to something else

        Or

i probably would have to do a few little upgrades to the second one but the first i would problably leave alone.

Not too bad, I'd upgrade the video card though.

You can crunch the numbers for ever from each builder, it can be endless. But I think you going in the right direction.

I think you'd be much happier with that rig then an XPS.

I like the fact that the case's from 120mm fan is mounted on the chassis not a HD rack. Mine is mounted on an HD rack and even though there are no drives in it, it obstructs some of the air flow.

A lot depends on what you want to do with it. I'm assuming your looking to play BF2, and other high end games. Another thing many don't take into consideration is their monitor. What's the max resolution of your monitor? Doesn't make a lot of sense to build a rig that can push resolutions in your favorite games that your monitor doesn't even support. Sure you'll get more frames per second, and the ability to turn the AA up, but at some point that stuff doesn't make for a better rendition. Only the next resolution up will do that. You might be able to downgrade a few things if you monitor is only able to display 1280x1024. The only thing you'll lose is some frame rate , but you might pocket a few dollars. Then when you get a new monitor do upgrades.

Just a quick look at each starting configuration (sometimes if you've made changes the link doesn't show them at these build sites).

The first link was an AMD2 with a starting price of $1259.00. By upgrading to 2gigs of RAM (highly recommended for BF2), and dropping the Vcard from an 8800GTS 320 to a 7950 256 the price is only a few dollars more $1279.00.

Personally I'd rather have the second gig of ram then the better Vcard. For comparison I play BF2 with the rig below @ 1600x1200 with all setting high and I get about an average of 70 frames. The machine I described above would do better, but if your monitor doesn't even support 1600x1200, then the 8800 is even more overkill at this point.

That's just an example of tuning your machine to what your doing and what you can display.

The problem is builders cut into their profits to make upgrades more enticing. The upgrade at Vigor from an 8800 320 from a 7950 256 is only $67.00. Sounds like a steal and it is a good deal. But if you not using most of the 8800's juice with games right now, then what did you save? Remember that 8800 right now might be $339.00 (just an example), but next summer when a new game comes out and you actually use some of it's power it will only be $199.00. Thats a savings of $140.00. Now you've saved that money and have 2 Vcards. You could give it to your little brother or sell it to defer the cost of the new card.

The point is don't get wrapped up in "maxing" everything out. Your dad will be happier too. Think about the games you play and how demanding they are, and what resolutions your monitor can support. Yes if you buy now you won't have to spend later. But there are always upgrades, and if the money now only gives you 200frames in BF2 rather then 100frames, what difference did it make?

              For Instance:
Last April I almost put a 7900 and was thinking about dual 7900s. In my rig (the one below), what would it have gained me spending that money then ? At the time the 7900s were over $300.00 each. The 7800GT saved me $10.00 from a single 7900 and other then having a better frame rate would have not provided a better gaming experience. Never mind dual 7900s.

              See what I'm getting at?

              Some other things.............

One general thing I would do is some how with in your budget get into the chipset above the lowest one offered at any of these sites(mobo platform 570, 590, 680i etc etc). It's really the root of the system and while I wouldn't spend the money for the newest chipsets since anything just out is the most expensive, I would spend the extra money for the middle chipset offered .

Another general rule of thumb (and I hate to say it) is to lean towards the Intels. AMD has had the "faster and cheaper" money conscious gamers for quite a few years now, but this recent push by Intel has really changed that. From everything I've read till AMD counters the C2Ds, it's really the way to go. AMD2 is good, but most reviews give the nod to C2D's when it comes to performance vs. cost.

Also don't go with extra cooling right away, you can always add fans and CPU coolers, especially if you like to do small upgrades like that. See how your temps are with stock cooling, then make the necessary changes. You might save a few bucks there too.

              Good Luck........

                  Re: New computer

If you must spend the extra money to get someone else to build the comp, then go for the first VigorGaming comp, but drop the video card to a 7950GT, up the ram to 2gb, and up the cpu to the 2.2Ghz AMD. (preferebly the 2.4 one)

'cuz unless you're running two monitors or are at an extremely high res, a mid-end cpu is going to bottleneck a 8800gts pretty badly (meaning your CPU won't be able to talk to your 8800 fast enough for it to perform at peak.

two gigs because BF2 will use upwards of 768mb if I remember correctly, leaving you pocket change for the remaining processes.

mo' ram = mo' better than the 8800 for that set up, imho.

On the other hand, with the 8800gts, you'd be set for DX10 supported games when they start coming out around Christmas.

But you would need atleast a 2.8Ghz(maybe 2.9) AMD x2 or a 2.4Ghz Intel C2D to not hold the 8800GTS back.

You can argue all day of what kind of system to buy, but I think we can all agree that if you're planning on a cheap but powerful gaming computer you need to go custom.

I would no matter what stay away from Dell. They are pretty bad when it comes to gaming. This system I'm on now (building my new system) is a Dell Dimension 4600 with a lot of upgrades. Before it was upgraded at all though, I could barely run Call of Duty: United Offensive on Low Settings with 60 FPS.

Buy custom, and do it all at once because by the time you put it together it'll already be outdated.

Yup, totally custom, I wouldn't buy a computer from ibuypower or cyberpowerpc, I heard a lot of bad stuff about them. They have horrible customer service and unreliable parts. :|: :|:
