Leaving it on can lead to degraded performance, depending on which and how many processes/programs you keep running.
On the other hand, your computer isn't suffering much wear and tear when its on and at idle. The most wear and tear a computer suffers is from the surge of electricity when you turn it on, and the sudden de-energization when you turn it off.
That's why you can only turn modern computers on and off a half-billion times before you damage your silicon or your capacitors, and why a good power supply is only rated for 80,000 hours (9 years continuous).
So...just be very careful.
