Leaving it on can lead to degraded performance, depending on which and how many processes/programs you keep running.

On the other hand, your computer isn't suffering much wear and tear when its on and at idle. The most wear and tear a computer suffers is from the surge of electricity when you turn it on, and the sudden de-energization when you turn it off.

That's why you can only turn modern computers on and off a half-billion times before you damage your silicon or your capacitors, and why a good power supply is only rated for 80,000 hours (9 years continuous).

So...just be very careful.

yeah my comp has 2 gigs of ram, nvidia 8800 gts intel core 2 duo E6600 and in thrmaltake armor. it has a huge has 25 cm side fan 1 led fan at the pack, 1 at the front with a heatsink and PSU fan.

You have to realise that all those fans and drive motors in your hard drives will only spin so many million times and eventually wear out. Dust builds up on the fan blades and slowly de-stabilises them too. And you're exposing yourself to possible hackers through open ports.
No, turning it off is good, even if it's just for clearing your ram.

rebooting can make your pc perform faster under certain conditions. same thing applies with a cold start. unless you're hosting stuff, you should probably just behave normally, turning your pc when you're done for a significant amount of time.

energy saved + lack of program defects leading to increased memory usage + bona fide 100% spyware/virus protection (they can't access your data if your pc isn't on) > than always having one-touch access to your programs.

IMHO, anyway. your pc, your electric bill, and your peace of mind, though. :)

oh, edit: if you've got vista (sorry, didn't read back through thread to check) and you can suspend to flash rom, then the energy/spyware factor is largely mitigated...

...not that that justifies plopping down $200-400 on Vista, but if you did, anyway...

if there was a difference, it would be probably like 5 fps, so i wouldnt worry about it..


edit: and if you are so worried about it, why dont you just try each way and see which is better?

He is right, the person that told you to keep it on makes the PC run faster is acomplet tart. I recommend you turn it off daily for a few hours atleast, so that everything cools down. I usually have mine running for about 8 hours a day and then shut it down when its night time aroudn 11pm, and fek off and watch TV.

mine takes about 5-10 mins to cool down (5 because its water cooled, 10 when it wasn't!)

lol. wow. Do you all think major compnaies who depnd on computers reboot every night? No really.... been a tech for 15 years and i never heard such crazienss..
On or off.. on or off and I am asked this prob 2 times a day.
Its a matter of computer tasking. If you r comp is a file cabinate whith people only indexing. that machine can run for 50 years before it even thinks about rebooting.
This is a machine i actually maintain for a guy.. it hasnt shut down iin over 6 years. it has a 133 processor and 128 of edo ram. win 95

Now your game machines at home ar e totally differant.
However since you most likly have good gear to play games..
like a guy posted above.. Booting is stress!
More stres than the actually playing of the game.

So, to reboot or to leave on, it doesnt matter as your home pc is not a true workstation. Work stations Stay on. more efficient and cost productive.

Your "toy" meh. No defiante answer mates. I dont reboot my game machine unless and only to empty a game cache of some sort or to reconfig my vid,s for differrant types of games.
other than that it is always on. my work comp beside it.. it doesnt shut off and its been at least 4 months since i can rember booting that one.


If your abusive to your box lol you prob want to find a way to reset your box without an actually boot.

be nice to your box and give it a hug and try not to stress it out with to much booting :)
