How much performance do you lose from turning off your comp?

im starting to keep on my comp because people told me it makes my computer slower by turning it off, is this true? if it is how much performance do u lose in about a month of turning it off for the night?

omg lol, you lose performance slowly by leaving it on dude, memory stacks up expecially in microcraps windows! rebooting after major ordeals helps your computer, its not good for any pc to have 24/7 uptime, unless you have thourally setup good cooling, and your running linux....

He is right, the person that told you to keep it on makes the PC run faster is acomplet tart. I recommend you turn it off daily for a few hours atleast, so that everything cools down. I usually have mine running for about 8 hours a day and then shut it down when its night time aroudn 11pm, and fek off and watch TV.

before a mjor tournament i restart to clear my memory out and hard drive cache.

My pc will stay on 24/7 but it does have 8 fans. Who ever told you that is in hippy land!

yeah my comp has 2 gigs of ram, nvidia 8800 gts intel core 2 duo E6600 and in thrmaltake armor. it has a huge has 25 cm side fan 1 led fan at the pack, 1 at the front with a heatsink and PSU fan.

only if you like getting messages saying "windows is out of virtual memory" or
"Windows is out of memory" and you prefer to let your apps take as long as they want to startup....frequent restarts keeps your system snappy!

or like putting extra stress on all the components you paid so much for.....

if your running windows the longer your uptime the worse it will perform untill you reboot! linux is the exception to the rule! linux can actually run for months on end provided the machine itself wont overheat!

if your running windows the longer your uptime the worse it will perform untill you reboot!

thats probably true, but with more memory you wont notice the performance decrease as much. I have 2 gig of ram (corsair xms) and usually reboot once a week, and anytime I need max performance.

i leave my computer on 24/7 and see no difference but in case of a match i prob would reboot.

When do lightbulbs blow out? Yeah, sounds like a stupid, irrelevant question. But they almost always blow when you turn them on after some down time. Cycling power stresses components as much as leaving the computer running if you have good cooling in place.

I reboot my comp as needed to clear my PF usage in order to play Oblivion or other newer games. I have pretty good cooling, so I leave my comp running otherwise. Of course, I live in barracks, so I don't pay my utilities. When I get back to the real world I'll end up letting my computer sleep more. My rig sucks some power.

Also, sometimes there is a small performance gain in some situations/applications by leaving your comp on. Some things that reside in memory come back up faster than if you start them on a fresh boot. That's why test comps are generally rebooted between benchmarks to clear the cache so the numbers are standardized. If part of the map/area in which you are running the benchmark is still cached, it will start faster and change the average FPS.

Yep, repeatedly powering the PC on and off will cause physical strain to everything that heats up.

Still, keeping it off saves a ****load of power and you can use the money saved to buy decent new parts for your PC.

For being a self-proclaimed PC guru your case is sloppy as ****. Mine would put yours to shame, my friend.

I have three machines running different OS (well versions of Windows) Server 2003, XP x64 and XP 32-bit that run 24/7 with no issues. They don't get rebooted that often. Perhaps once a week.

Like the guy with the light bulb example above, I generally only experienced problems during powerup where the most strain is being put on the system.
