How about this.. if you have enough money to risk an expensive card then you could obviously afford a better one with a good heatsink/fan and a faster clock in the first place. I think it's very irrisponsible to encourage overclocking. Some poor noob will try it and think 'maybe I can squeeze just a few more mhz out of it' then BOOM, you got a burnt out card not worth a crows fart. The problem with forums is nobody is accountable. Anybody who knows computer systems should always stress the dangers involved in manipulating hardware.

Plain overclocking does not really destroy any card or component. You can make it unstable, but as long as there's no voltage increase involved there's nearly zero risk of decreasing the life of card.

I've burned nearly all graphic cards I've had. Usually they've lasted years and already being swapped into secondary computers before stopped working. However, the most recent, 6800 LE @ Ultra didn't last that long, it broke while it was still in operation after about a year and a half. It was time for upgrade anyway, but the card is still worth almost 100$. But I knew I was taking a risk. I bough a cheap card and modded it into the fastest card on the market at that moment. It couldn't take 1.5v for very long.

And in many cases overclocking is pointless. However, considering that there are no risks, only effort involved it can't really be a bad thing either. As long as no voltage modifications done.

And if you decrease life from 10 years to 5, it doesn't really matter. (well if its 8800gtx then maybe)

LuckySeven, you're forgetting something. I don't know about you but I usually sell my old parts and that helps pay for the next upgrade. Hard to sell something with a burnt smell to it yes?
What I meant was, if people start fooling around with components, they usually don't stop. There's an old saying... 'you can't polish a turd'. If your rig is underperforming, build a faster one but don't risk it by messing around.
Just so you know, I've built 54 gaming machines (not all for me of course) and not once have I overclocked one and very rarely do I have one come back with a problem that isn't self induced.

I've noticed that all hardcore overclockers buy 7300GT because it overclocks well.

some people buy cheap-*** cards like that just to see how far it goes, but most overclockers buy cards that suit their PC - ie my 7950GT works great with my 3700 on a 40% overclock

How insane would you have to be to mess around with a piece of hardware worth up to $700?.. and for what, a few extra frames?. Buy a bigger one and leave it as it is.. ever seen an 'overclocked' GFX card with half the resistors burnt out? or heard the term WARRANTY?

erm, my GFX cards have ALWAYS been overclocked and not ONE has died.

I've never EVER seen a card with the resistors burnt out, i would dearly like to see some proof of this though - lemme geuss, you did a vMod and screwed it up? thats your fault, not overclockings faullt
