Overclocking the GFX card

so my graphics card sucks a** (7300GT) so i'm wondering if overclocking it would help, how to do it, and the ups and downs of overclocking. Any input is appreciated

i'm also wondering how to get find your fps in a game, thanks

I can tell you with confidence that on a low end card like that it wouldn't help. You may gain 5 fps at the loss of stability.

To find your FPS in game press: `

That brings up your console where you then type: renderer.drawfps 1

Or just use Fraps, a free benchmark program which displays your FPS in big yellow letters.

@Wreck: is OC a good thing to do on for example two 7600GT's running SLi?

yea, no real point in overclocking that card. just buy a new one if you can. maybe a 7900gt or 7950gtx. if your on a tight budget. get a 7600gt

Its always point to overclock, squeezing the very last of your PC. First of all you need CoolBits or just download Rivaturner (google it ). Easier is to download coolbits, then under nvidia panel you should see overclock tab, click on it , you can set clock by your self or run the auto setup wich in your case is best way to do it.

I have the 8800 GTS, is that program really good to use for that card as well?

So you just adjust the settings and run a test to see if it works? Can stuff crash or can you wreck your card? Or can I search and see what others have their settings as and safely adjust mine to those levels?

I've noticed that all hardcore overclockers buy 7300GT because it overclocks well.

Saffron.3, RivaTuner or nVidia's tools are good, just slide sliders higher until you see image corruption in games. It's recommended to monitor temperatures while doing it. You can find monitoring in RivaTuner. Also I'd recommend AtiTool (Google), because it can automatically increase clocks and keep scanning for artifacts and usually works pretty well. And no, you can't break it unless you increase voltages.

Oh and coolbits. Right click the reg file and choose edit. See last two lines and you can change whether you use old nVidia pane or new control center. Or both.

Nvidia's Ntune will not let me adjust the sliders at all...when I click on optimize my screen goes blue and I have to do a hard reset (sits at blue screen).

I click to adjust and for some reason both buttons remained clicked and I cannot de-click the 1st option....its weird and Nvidia cannot help me on the forum because they do not "recommend" OCing.

That is seriously misleading. Not many people on this forum will pencil overclock like that. I don't think that the OP is willing to do something like that. I only know of a handful of people who have tried it.

What is the point in overclocking an 8800 GTS?! if you are thinking about playing crysis/quake wars on max settings full server, etc, then just do a dual 8800GTS. Other than that, the 8800gts can hold its own in the current titles out for PC.

I just wanted to see what it would "optimize" the OC at...plus gain some FPS for BF2 isn't all that bad!

I also cannot do dual 8800 as I have one PCI-E slot, my mobo is a work load one (pre built HP comp) and is pure junk from what I have researched on the net (some Asus one that they dont even list on their own site)

On the other hand, it would be an interesting little project, and even it the vid got totall flicked up, OP's only out like $35 for another 7300...just the reason the OP might need to get a 7600gt for $90 or $100 instead.

And then enjoy the game.

How insane would you have to be to mess around with a piece of hardware worth up to $700?.. and for what, a few extra frames?. Buy a bigger one and leave it as it is.. ever seen an 'overclocked' GFX card with half the resistors burnt out? or heard the term WARRANTY?

Not very, there are some folks who have volt modded 8800GTX SLi systems just because they want those last extra free FPS.

And there are lots of folks who remove the stock heatsink as soon as they get the card to add one which will cool the card better than the stock one.

There are lots of reason to mess around with the card, free performance is always good. :)
