Graphics card help (what to buy)

Well I play BF2 on low and 800x600 res and get around 80FPS and I want better resolutions. My native resolution for my monitor is 1280x1024 and my computer consists of Dual AMD 64x2 4600+ and 2 gigs of ram.


I am looking at the GeForce 7950 GT OC and the 7900 GTX; however, if there are better cards could someone list them as I would really like to look at them nothing over say $500.

I have found out so far (1200x1024 resolution, 4xAA and 16xAnistropy, all HIGH settings)
The 7950 GT (not OC) was clocking in at 95 fps.
While the 7900GTX was in at around 112 fps

I could not find any information on the over clocked version of the 7950 (GT OC), but I would assume it to be faster than listed.

Are these decent cards and worth my time? I also play FEAR and would like to be able to run on high with decent FPS.

So lemme know if my choices are good and if there is others I should be looking at.

both of those cards are an excellent choice. I tend to chose the XFX brand as they factory overclock the memory speeds, which helps alot in games.

If I have the bucks I would definitley go for the 8800GTX...
Oh, now I see you want something under 500$... The 7950 is a very good card. But I'd still go for the 8800GTX if I was you.

i would suggest to go with the 8800GTS's. The 320mb or 640mb version depending on your budget.

If you're running at 1280x1020 and aren't thinking of getting a new monitor for a while go for the 8800GTS 320mb, the 640mb and the GTX only show a VISUAL (read visual, not just FPS) improvement if you were running higher than 1280x1024. Then use that saved money to maybe upgrade RAM or whatever you feel like spending it on. Theres no point buying something that costs more when you wont see get the most out of it.

What/Where are the XFX brands? NM I totally see it now, its over clocked a tad as the specs are higher than normal!

I don't plan on getting a new monitor as this one is more than fine for me! Isn't the 8800 GTS newer? The card does not look that much better than the 7900 GTX....Whats the FPS on BF2 for both of those cards? As the 8800 GTS is cheaper....which makes no sense as it is newer......

The 8800gts will blow the 7900gtx out of the water, it's that much faster.

All right so the 8800 GTS 320mb is the one I will get....as it is about the same price online as the 7950 is in town.

ONE question I have though.....Out of all the 320mb cards on the list

Is it worth it to pay that extra amount to go from 500mhz and 1.6 ghz for $359 to 580mhz and 1.8ghz for $439....is it enough of a difference for the price? If its like 5-10fps...not worth it!
AND some of the cards are the same specs...but are $40 different in price...whats up with that? Because the 8800 GTS 500MHZ 640MB 1.6GHZ is $464 so if the $439 320mb is good...I might as well pay the extra $40 and get the 640mb one....right? Or is the over clocked 320 better than the 640?...As you can tell I'm not to proficient in this area!

And what is the difference between these two cards?

Done and done, I bought that card in the link above and after everything was said and done it came to $412. Now I just need to upgrade my power supply as my comp only has a 300w in it......

For every graphics card, such as the 8800, it's best to get the cheapest. The only real difference between the different brands are some modules, I think some brands have different voltage regulators, and of course, heatsinks and clock rates. The clock rates and heatsinks can be fixed for far cheaper than they want you to pay, one BIOS flash and a trip to eBay is all it needs.

I would disagree since Evga is the best imo. They have amazing customer service, price/performance ratio, and the best possible warranty that even covers overclocking.
