I can figure out chord progessions for guitar really easily, and I can do melodic dictations for guitar leads, but as far as making a tab, I won't do that.

Tab is simply too stupid of a notation system to be worth my time, and it cripples guitarists. I advise all serious guitarists to learn their instrument as though it's an instrument and not something else. Learn to read score, learn to play by note name and not by fret number, and learn some basic music theory. In the long run, you'll be better off.

I'm pretty sure you can't learn stuff like this through note names and scores. (I think). And tabs for metal are a hell of a lot easier.

Each has its place. I usually look up the tabs if I want to learn a song (and then possibly make notations about the theory used in the music) but if I make up my own stuff I tend to use a lot of theory.

And grounded of course you can learn it through note names, all music has notes in it... unless you think you're cool like John Cage. But its ... harder.

EDIT: And I listened to the song you posted, that's a fairly simple metalcore song... sounds exactly the same as a bunch of other bands. I recommend you learn some of ABR's earlier stuff, everyone copied off of them. :P

Oh and take a looksee at my posts on the New Music Discussion thread if you want some teh awesome br00tal metal bandz.

Tabs for me are just easier. So yeah...

And sorry for sounding like an uber n00bz, but ABR? (I'll probably facepalm when you tell me haha)

Cool, I'll take a look, but I've got some stuff that I'm refining right now (As Blood Runs Black and a couple LoG songs) but when I've got those nailed down, and if I fail to figure out Sever The Ties I'll move on to those!

EDIT: August Burns Red. How'd I miss that? -facepalm- :p

But there is a lot of theory behind metal music, for the most part its pedal points and chugga chugga on the low string, but it can get pretty interesting sometimes.

Just listening to the first I can hear right now that the first note in that lead guitar riff is C, and that the riff progresses through the C minor scale. Knowing that, I don't even need to look at a tab to figure out what to play; I can just do it by ear.

When the second guitar riff comes and the notes play in harmony, the second guitar plays the same melodic progression, but in E♭major instead of C minor.

So in this case, knowing some basic music theory, having a reasonably trained ear, and understanding your instrument in terms of a musical system rather than a series of arbitrary numbers makes learning this so incredibly easy.

Sheet music for that song would be just as easy. If I had that song on sheet music, I could probably play it from sight reading alone.

There really isn't any more theory behind metal music than there is any other music. Metal musicians just choose to do things that don't require any additional understanding of theory or any more robust of a skill set; they're just not used very often in other music, which makes the metal musicians believe that they are using 'a lot of theory'.

why would you want to learn that. It's worse than the noise I make. Learn some melvins.

Alright alright. You made your point Alec. And my ear isn't trained, and I haven't been playing for very long, so tabs are easy for me.

Never said that it used "more" theory or anything of that matter. I like the new Jazz/metal fusiony stuff that's starting to get popular. Not to mention just straight up Jazz... makes my car rides to school/work and such much more relaxing.

Yeah, the genericness and all round unoriginality is the reason why I don't like a lot of metalcore these days... I swear at this point its the most commercial form of metal, well at least here. Hatebreed and Black dahlia murder (dethcore) are cool though.

Well all those bands today (Parkway Drive, Texas in July etc.) pretty much copied off of them lol. I still think they're pretty much the absolute best in terms of -core, I've been listening to their stuff for years and I never get tired of it.
