Bought myself the MX518, a few questions.

So, after reading tonnes of reviews and whatnot, I bought a gaming mouse. The decisive factor over G5 was the 2 buttons on the left side, believe it or not.

Even though the mouse is technically better, its 180 degree turn from my former mouse philosophy. Ultralight, and as small as possible. I know Razor and Logitech compete in the gaming mouse market whilst providing to different tastes. Are the Razor mice significantly smaller and lighter, or are they really no different except in size?

Im not considering switching yet, but if Razor provides that to my taste, I may.

Im a finger player, as opposed to the palm player, too.

My Razer Copperhead weights exactly 100 grams, it was defiantly the first thing I noticed when I took it out of the box. The Copperhead is just over 5 inches (13cm), The LMB and RMB were massive on comparison with my old bog standard MS optical mouse.

It has two buttons on either side of the mouse; by default the two on the left are programmable through a game menu and the two on the left control the on-the-fly DPI changing. This can be changed so that they are programmable as well if you want just the one DPI setting at different stages of a game or all the time. All this is done via the drivers and software.

Generally Razers are smaller, if not physically, at least they feel somewhat smaller due to their shape and light weight. Also buttons are more sensitive, which makes it possible to hold mouse relatively far in front, not inside your hand because the buttons reach all the way in the middle of the mouse. Only con is, that if you hold it that way Scroll Wheel gets left too far it pretty much limits how far you can hold the mouse.

To my taste, even Razers are too heavy, but you cant have everything in the same package. Size is fine though, it could be smaller but thats not really needed.

Also, I hate the clicking sound and feel mouse buttons make, so first thing did to my Razer I opened it and disassembled the micro switch of the left button to be more sensitive. Now only very little pressure is needed and it can probably be clicked twice as fast as the right button.

I went through my G5 a few months ago, and instead of getting another one I went with the G400. It's Laser(I believe the MX518 is Optical?), and has the two thumb buttons aswell. It's lighter, and the M1 & M2 buttons are fat.

Well, you cant really say Razers would be smaller, because there is not that much difference. But MX518 does look more fat and it does feel the same compared to Diamondback for example. MX518s profile is higher, and its waist is thicker.

Overall Razers feel smaller and more agile for me. I could never use any Logitech gaming mouse, except G1 maybe. Razers also have more grooves and holes for fingers, which make them feel different and more solid as a part of your hand. Just my opinion though.

Hi all, I hopped onto this bandwagon lately, been having problems in BF2 with the buttons not registering - none of them do. I have the latest Setpoint 3.3 or whatever drivers.

Thought it was my modified controls.con but it wasn't. When I click on a field to be assigned to a mouse button, it flat out refuses to register.

Any ideas? I did kinda buy this to be able to insta-prone properly, amongst other things. Also, the scroll wheel is a ***** to press down compared to my previous Microsoft Nobody-Knows mouse. Any way to make it click like all the other buttons? Or does it wear in over time?

you cant go wrong with a 518. I had the choice between the mx518 and the copperhead when i bought a mouse, and the Mx518 just felt better in my hand. However the razer is an excellent mouse. lets put it this way, you cant go wrong with either, its personal preferance.

i have the same problem, so i just set all the buttons i wanted for BF2 in setpoint as a keystroke.you can also do macros with the keystroke. the scroll mouse button is a little more solid than other mice but not difficult to press, shouldnt be a problem....

Don't worry, playing around with Setpoint fixes it (you have to assign those buttons as generic or hotkeys, and untick all the keep settings in the game mode panel). Now I'm trying to get the right sensitivity for it not to skip like a ***** in-game @ 1600dpi.

Oh, and over the last 3 days, the scroll wheel wore down a nice amount, easy to click now, which is good. Maybe I'm used to it...

MX518 is better, from what I heard. Which is why I got it. Loads of benchmarks show it's smoother and whatnot when you increase the sampling rate. Not this mouse vs others, but optical vs laser in general.

It's in Logitech Setpoint, the button mapping thing. Don't see why you'd want a macro, that's a waste of a thumb button you could set for proning.

Speaking of which, is it just my timing or is proning with a mouse button far dodgier than with Z?

Oh my, missed this one camper, so if you see this topic again...

I use X key to prone, which is a lot closer to the index finger, adds sh!tload of mobility and keeps the fingers on the keyboard. Its been at least 2 months since I bought the MX518, or 3 months, and Im still not using the sidekeys for infantry play. Ive assigned them to "cockpit view" and "rear chase" for land vehicle but I found it rather useless to map any other keys to the sidebuttons.

For example Ive got the main weapon key mapped as F, so I can switch firemodes and switch back to main just by pressing the key next to RIGHT STRAFE with my index finger. And proning has been pushed to X aswell which means I already got the maximum from the keyboard. And getting used to the mouse keys would not be that useful.

As for macros, when I posted the last post I wanted to experiment with various options in some games I was playing at the time. I like creating these little combinations but I doubt Im going to use any macro for actual gameplay. In BF2 Im not much of a bag spammer or nadespammer either. But a FEAR-esque "press G to throw nade" thing would be pretty damn cool.
