Low FPS :(

My system:

Athlon XP 2800+ 2.08mhz
Asrock K7VT4A+ mobo
2 gigs noname pc3200
geforce 7600GS AGP OC'ed to 515/800 w/ coolbits
win xp

Problem is that it runs about 30fps w/ few people/no people on all low settings w/ med textures. But when i get into a 64 player map and really get into the thick of battle w/ tons of people everywhere my comp slows down to about 20fps, less sometimes.

The game is playable, but i'm just dying to get it consistant. I've heard of people w/ my video card w/ everything running high, so i'm thinking it could be my processor.

I know where to get an athlon 64 3000+ w/ mobo for cheap so i'm wondering if it will make a big difference. Also what else could i do to get the top performance out of my rig?

For BF2, the processor is the MOST important part for smooth gameplay. The graphics card and RAM are also very important but you should be fine with the one you have. The processor though is whats giving you the low fps. Upgrading to the 3000+ will help a small amount, but not much. If you can spend about less than $140, I'll show you a motherboard/processor combo that will play all high 70-100+ fps. The processor (amd 64 4000+) is at newegg.com...I just bought it, and its amazing!!

But for that you need a 939 socket mobo. I'm not sure if your case can fit MicroATX motherboards but heres on thats really cheap and will work fine(if you have PCI-E.) If not look on ebay for an abit UL8...great AGP 939 board! You can get that really cheap too.

If you need a different mobo, like an ATX size check out ebay for some deals, thats where I got mine. You should be able to get a socket 939 board for around $60 or so.


But this processor is such a good deal, go with it and find a mobo that fits. You'll be really happy.

Yeah man awsome...get a good deal on a motherboard (like the one you found) and get that processor and you'll be set. Many people say that the $75 AMD 64 4000+ is great to overclock...you dont need to. Its really fast for me the way it is esp. for bf2. Just set it up and go! Let me know how it worked out for you, cause I just bought it from newegg about a week ago and i'm still amazed.

Is it balls, he will notice absolutely no difference going from a 2800 to a 3000. Save your money. Theres nothing wrong with your hardware.
Your problem is software related, a FPS game is almost completely GFX card dependant, processor comes into play with RTS titles, dont misunderstand, of course the processor can play its part but hell be wasting his money.
You need to do a clean install of your system, reinstall everything from scratch. Unless you are willing to make a bigger jump with your processor, save your money as a 3000 will make no difference to your game.

I agree with UNDIESRULES stick with what you have. Although i dont agree with doing a clean install on your system (only as a last resort). You can almost always find ways of cleaning up your system without doing a clean install. Check your process see what you can shutdown and go from there. I think thats where you will find your problem.......Good Luck

dude you didn't even read what he was upgrading to. I told him to go with an AMD 4000+ thats only $75 on newegg.com. And this game is completely dependant on CPU power, no question. Of course the graphics card and RAM play a very important role too but he plays on low setting and still gets low FPS...thats means it is his processor. Could be junk on HD, but I doubt it. L2 Cache is VERY important in BF2. People like "undies" here have no idea how computers work and just say stuff they think is right. Here man do some reading.

YES your CPU is fine. I have an AMD FX-55 in my system (which is only 2400 mhz and it runs like a charm). I also am using a 6800 card with all settings on high and AA off, so your 7600 should be fine too.

Oh wait...your using and APG card, my bad...now that is definitely slowing you down....PCIe (pci express) is much faster than AGP 8x!!!! You have a decent card with the 7600, but with APG your shooting yourself in the foot!

As for the new motherboard, if you decide to go that route....make sure it has a PCIe graphics slot, and get a new graphics card to fit that slot, otherwise you are wasting money to get a new mobo and CPU with out getting new graphics too. And if you are getting a more powerful CPU and graphics card...you will need a bigger Power Supply.

The mobo your buying is ALSO APG!!!!! So you will gain no Graphics benefits other than you can reuse your current card! Yes your CPU will be better, and that will help....but not as much as a PCIe 7950GTOC would!!!

Yeah but the processor I told him to get was ONLY $75!!! And it will make a HUGE difference. The PCI-E card you told him to get 7950gto is like $300!! Sure PCI-E is fatser but he already has a decent AGP card.

I had a crappy celeron processor and was getting 20 or less FPS on every setting in BF2, even as low as possible. Then I uprgaded my graphcis card to a AGP 6800ultra. Still low FPS, on all setting. I asked alot of people on this forum and they all told me my processor was fine and that now i needed more ram. I uprgaded again to 2g's of dual channel ram. I though now i'm set. I tried the game again on ALL LOW SETTINGS and was getting the same frame rate!! I new all along it was the processor, but I istened to everyone else who had no idea what they were talkin about. So i ended up wasting a ton of money!! I upgraded to the AMD 64 4000+, never overclocked for 75 dollars and and an abit UL8 AGP motherboard for like 50 bucks on ebay. And now I can play all high with 70-100fps all the time! Games will run differently by the way its built, Call of Duty for example is almost completey dependant on graphics card power. So a cheap processor will work fine with it. BF2 is built completly around processor L2 cache and FSB speed. patleeman is running an AGP 7600 which should work fine...it may not be able to run settings on high, but on medium he should be getting great FPS after he upgrades his processor. I know what it is like to try and upgrade a PC to play a game without spending to much money...it sucks! But I'm standing by what I told him. It worked for me amazingly and it will for him too.

Also you said your FX-55 is only at 2400mhz....thats not what makes it amazing at playing games. It is that it as 2x 64 L1 cache and 1024 L2 cache. Thats all the difference in battlefield 2. I had a 3.0ghz (faster than your FX-55) celreon in 120kb cache and it ran bf2 horribly. Just because it says it has a high GHZ speed doen't make it a good processor! Some of the new dual cores run at only 1.8ghz! Thanks for further proving my point man.

I ended up buying that processor, the mini atx mobo, a pci-e geforce 7600gt, and a new PSU all for 300, so i'm pretty pleased.

Its in the mail, and i'm dying to get it in, i'll report back when i get everything installed.

You went with a whole new system!! But for around 300 thats amazing....it should work out really well for you man..You bought the same card though??? The 7600gt is supposed to be a pretty good card. Good luck man and let me know how it worked out.

I got all the parts in, and wow.

I can run bf2 on all high now!

Its like night and day, holy moley!

Thanks for the help man, i really appreciate it. For 350 i got:

1 asus a8v-vm se mobo
1 AMD athlon 64 4000+ San diego
1 Geforce 7600GT PCI-e
1 500W psu
1 480W psu
and
1 Zalman CNPS7700-Cu CPU Cooler

I plugged everything in and it posted on the first try no problems at all.

I'm even using cheap ddr400 memory and the mobo recognized it no problem.

The only problem is that my sblive5.1 was making some weird crackling noise, so i'm going to try out the onboard audio, played a few mp3's and it sounded good.

Again thanks for the help! I'm off to experience REAL bf2 now.
