Which is better?

Ok, i am thinking of getting a new rig, and i am a bit short of money and i was wondering which is better-
256MB ATI® Radeon® X1300 Pro graphics card
or
256MB nVidia® GeForce® 7300 Turbocache graphics card
any help would be appreciated

neither!!!! Get either a 6600GT or x800, both of those cards are very poor. Try and pick up a x800 on ebay or something before throwing your money down the drain on one of those 2. You will find the older generation of cards will perform alot better than the low end new generation. 7600GT would be a good card to get also.

Thing is since i have no clue how to build a comp i went onto the dell uk website and those are the only graphics cards that you can choose. this is the one i am looking at COMP on what settings do you think it could run BF2 on??

The video card is the MOST important part of the computer when you finally decide what you can afford.

As long as the CPU you are getting is something new like an AMD socket AM2 dual core, or an Intel Core 2 Duo(preferred)...you will be fine in that department.

You can survive on 1gig of ram, though 2x1024 is highly recommended...as long as you leave enough money left over for a good video card!!!!!!!!!! !

Screw a sound card, the onboard 8 channel audio will do more than fine until your next birthday or Christmas(assuming you're young), or paycheck.

Build/have built, your new PC around the VIDEO CARD. What money is left over is what you spend on the CPU, ram, etc. etc.

Don't get a gay Transformers looking, overpriced, goofy assed, rainbow colored, multi flashing lights case! Just get a modest, cheap case.

Power supply: very important. Also not to be skimped on with remaining money.
Since you seem very limited on funds, it is likely you won't be getting rich anytime soon eh? Therefore you don't need a 600watt monster. Anything good name brand with at least 450-550 watts will power anything with the exception of the very highest card made...which you won't be affording.

Besides the wattage of the power supply, make sure to check the amp rating of the 12v rails. You will find this info on the side of the power supply, a big shiny sticker.
There will be many numbers but the one we want to look at is the +12v1 and +12v2...the amp rating of each rail is directly below each +12V on the sticker, it will be a number with a capital A next to it: like 22A

A good PSU with 450-550 watts will have 12v amp ratings of at LEAST 18A each rail, or 20A, or 22A.

Get your budget
find a video card(8600gt coming in 2 months $150) use this time to save more money!
pick a good power supply, at least 450 watts, 18Amps each rail.
Use rest of money for rest of parts..if you can muster 2x1024 of ram, you'll have an awesome computer.

my budget is £550 used to be £500, thing is i only had the choice of those 2 becuse they were the only ones that dell came up with in the options and i can't build one, i e-mailed my local computer shop about them making me one and they have not replied

I don't know how the prices are outside the U.S.(we have awesome prices here), but you might need to save just a tiny bit more, maybe 100-150 and you can have a monster.

A place charging to build is always going to cost more than building yourself which hopefully is done with a free O/S

Make more than just local calls, there might be a place somewhere else in Aus that build them better/cheaper...you just need to find them in the time you are using to save a bit extra.

The best card suggestion again being the 8600gt, forces you to research/save for about 2 months from today...when it should arrive. Use that time wisely.

The video card is NOT the most important part, although it is a key feature.

I have the same case(a business Dimension 9150), and you're going to find that there is not much room for expansion. The Dell 375W PSU is pretty beefy, but still not great. My XFX 7950GT BARELY fits and runs. The only bottleneck is the PSU. If you're going to get a high-end old generation card, you'll be fine, even the case should be big enough. Just remember, Dells are not very upgrade friendly when it comes to room and power.

i got a e6300 and an asrock l775 vsta motherboard for about 150 quid. this motherboard supports ide & sata drives, ddr & ddrII ram and pci-e & agp graphics card so it's quite good if you've already got some old bits to put in there.

i picked up an X800XT for 60 quid out of the trade it and used my old hard drives and dvd drives. i'm very pleased with the rig i'm running now (everything high except textures) and it only cost just over £200. i'm sure you could get a beast for £500. especially if you're willing to look in skips or the local tip to get the case, power supply and maybe a hard drive if you're lucky.


i've got a feeling intel dropped the prices for the E6*** series chips recently too so you might get even more of a bargain.

building PC's arent cheap, mine costs like $1400, but scinto's idea is good because i had a similar setup before i upgraded and still got 50-100FPS with the 7900

it was a bit of a mix up. i had an old p4 board that was AGP - got the card and the old board burnt out before i could put the new card in. rather than sell it i stuck with the agp card and went for the VSTA motherboard in cast i want to upgrade to pci-e in the future, i don't think it'll be for a while yet though :)
