It took me a lot of reading, taking pics of my bios screens and correlating to what other people have written on their experiences on the net, to considering every part i've got in my pc including my PSU before I was willing to start playing with changing things.
My last amd64 Venice 3000+ I overclocked to venice 3500+ speed successfully on the mobo I had with a "wall" in the cpu setting where you couldn't get any further, meaning ram dividers were fun in a sadistic sort of way. My current san diego 3700+, which the previous experience of overclocking, although with a DFI mobo now built with overclocking in mind I've got upto 2750mhz instead of stock 2200mhz running speed with 3 simple changes in the bios based on a lot of experience playing with the old setup and a simple arctic freezer 64 hsf purchase..
You can only change a few things and be 100% sure it will work if you are copying someone elses settings, someone else with exactly the same gear as you.
Read your manual and find out how to clear the BIOS manually if you mess anything up. Practise how to reach the off switch on your PSU promptly!
You could start with a list of your mobo, cpu, ram. Then google the max fsb the components can handle, if your mobo has a "wall", then look for a small program on the net for your tech called an "overclocking calculator" which is well written and trusted that you put in your cpu rating (HT), intended divider and increase the cpu's mhz speed until you have jiggled everything so that everything is within the maximum limits and you have attained the best increase. Also google others results for the cpu regarding a colling heatsink/fan and how far your retail one will allow you to get and what temperature and whether buying a arctic freezer 7 will be beneficial to you (probably!)Comment
