Should I return my X1600 PRO and get 7600GS?

I got my ATI Radeon X1600 PRO for $199 - $45 = $154. They also have an eVGA 7600 GS for $139 - $50 = $90.

X1600 is DDR2 x 512MB, 7600GS is DDR2 x 256MB. Both 12 pipelines it looks, and both 128 bit it looks.

Would I be better off returning this X1600 Pro for the 7600GS?

I would say no simply because I have no problems running bf2 on high with my x1600 Pro. Why go through the trouble exchanging? Anyhow, get rid of those Catalyst drivers and download the Omega Drivers (Make sure you use a driver cleaner program!)

I would say no simply because I have no problems running bf2 on high with my x1600 Pro. Why go through the trouble exchanging? Anyhow, get rid of those Catalyst drivers and download the Omega Drivers (Make sure you use a driver cleaner program!)

You got ripped off on that X1600. For $50 less you could have got a 6800GT or X800 which would be better. Or an X1650, they're a different core than the X1600 and are about as good as a 7600GT.

Yeah I was just kind of going off what was cheap at Circuit City, I didn't feel like waiting. I need to build a new PC w/ PCI-E, but I'd have to buy mobo, cpu, RAM etc.

7600GT is $190 though. Only reason I snagged this one is because of the rebate...

Google search? Its about the same. If you need AGP bang for buck, something like an X800XT is a good buy if you do some smart shopping.

I hate video card numbering. Why give them #'s if they don't mean anything.

The numbers mean something, the first number is the series, the second number is the most important and tells you what level the card is.

i.e. 1600 = 1xxx series, x6xx being mid level.

But yes, its all convoluted and very misleading. Most people will assume the higher the overall number the better (i.e. thinking a 7300 is better than a 6800). Best to read reviews before buying ANY graphics card.

Then there's GT, GS, LE etc. etc.

I've been out of the computer game for a while for sure. Nvidia Riva TNT2 used to rock the hell out of games.

You're correct, but I've found the difference between the x1600 and the x800gt to be pretty small. I don't know if you are comfortable entering the world of overclocking but with a few minor tweaks you can get great performance out of the x1600 for the money you spend.

I'm not scared to overclock, that's what I built my system around. :) Thanks for the Omega link, I have that installed now, I see the control panel there. I need to get my CPU & memory clocked right first, then I'll start dicking with the video. I have 3DMark '03 also. Or is it '05, I forget.

Yeah, the X800 GT is pretty average, although the XT and XT PE versions are far better than a X1600. Or get a X800GTO which can be tweaked to X850XT PE specs, bargain of the century....
