    why?

    320 bit interface > 256 bit interface

    GDDR4 > GDDR3

    ~700m transistors > 278m transistors

    DX10 > DX9.0c

up to 1.5 Ghz core clock > 650 mhz core clock (stock GTX version)

Support for HDR+MSAA > One or the other

Just because it got released "just recently" and "the fact that its a beast" doesn't mean squat. Remember with the 7800 series? It was out only a few months when the 7900 series came out. The 7800 series was the top of the line card, and was very expensive when the 7900 series came out.

The 8800 GT will be much faster than the 7900 GTX. You are wrong. I have just proven such.
I bet you the 7900GTX will be able to do anything the 8800GT will, not to mention you could SLI the 7900GTX for less then what it is going to cost for 1 8800GT.

You will lose. The 7900GTX can't run DX10. The G80 will have 2x the pipelines the 7900 GTX has.

      48 pipelines > 24 pipelines

8800 GT is rumored to retail for 450-499 USD. Thats a massive price drop for the 7900GTX (about half) to be able to run SLi and cost as much as a single 8800 GT.

So what? DX10 isnt going to be a requirement to play games till middle of next year. Plus someone will find a way to make DX10 run on DX9 cards.

I know most DX10 games will run on DX9 cards. It's only when the DX10 only games come out.

Performance wise, the 8800 GT will be much faster than the 7900GTX.

If you look back at the first DX9 cards, wou will see that they were also much more powerful in DX8 games than the previous generation. Generally, a high-end card from one generation is about as powerful as a mid-range card from the next generation. Look at the difference between a 6800ultra and a 7800gtx.

We may not see DX10 only games for quite a while. The games coming out will be DX10/DX9 hybrids most likely. MS Vista will have it's own version of DX9 called DX9L (longhorn), that will enable you to play DX9 games, and use a DX9 video card on that OS.

There is no way to play a DX10 only game on a DX9 video card.

Here are is what I think the actual G80 specs will be:

              8800 GTX:
              32 pipes
              1 ROP per pipe
              1 TMU per pipe
4 unified shader processors per pipeline, each performing 1 operation per cycle, giving 128 shader ops per clock.

              8800 GTS:
              24 pipes
              1 ROP per pipe
              1 TMU per pipe
4 unified shader processors per pipeline, each performing 1 operation per cycle, giving 96 shader ops per clock.

even tho games like crysis and some other games wont require DX10...dx10 will sure look alot better

its like playing half life 2 on dx7 vs playing half life on dx10..its prettier

also first gen dx10 units are going to be power hungry, can you say 800W psu for SLI? Thats what dailytech say the manufacturers recommendations are coming in at.

I was umming and ahhring whether to wait for it or to get a cheap second 7800gt to sli and tide me over and tbh, waiting for the die shrink and 2nd gen acceptable products as far as heat and price gos could be as long as mid next year, easily - and since there is only 1 dx10 game thats remotely interesting to me (crysis) then i'll stick with the gt sli for now.

Id like you guys to know, that pipelines arent everything, its the architecture that counts.

Just hold your horses for now, and wait to see what the compittion has in store when these cards are realeased.

                    Quack im a monkey.

No dher, HL2 was DX9 wasnt it? And anyway if I game was designed for DX9 why is it going to be beter in DX10? I dont get it,
Simply put, DirectX is a Windows technology that enables higher performance in graphics and sound when you’re playing games or watching video on your PC.
You see that? performance not quality. I think your a bit confused between the two. Quality is how things look, performance is how things run. As far as Crysis goes I'm almost certian it will run perfectly fine on a SLI'd system with 2x 7900GTX, I mean it would have to wouldnt it? I mean DX10 isnt out nor Series 8 video cards... how did they do the demo's at E3?

so, by your logic, DX7 games should look just as nice as DX9 games.

                        Your logic is flawed.

Just adding to what's already been said, I believe the logic is that DX10 uses a much more efficient shader model, thereby allowing for much more effects/realism. Some of which are not possible to do with DX9. An example would be the inclusion of geometry shaders, which allows for more realistic effects.

For those of you that are less Technologically inclined, here's an equation that about sums it up.

                            SM4.0>SM3.0
                            =DX10>DX9
