You raise some good points but anybody who spends just shy of £200 pounds on a graphics card when the next lot are waiting in the wings is a fool. Even the budget range of the next generation will stand up to the current range and its all well and good investing in a new card but DX10 cards are a real development and not a pipe dream.

Foolish? Itll be at least another year till DX10 games are commonplace, and maybe another year till DX10 only games are out.

You could spend forever waiting for the next best thing, my advice is buy the most appropriate card to suit your budget at the time. The 2nd generation of DX10 cards will most likely be far better than the first, so you could argue holding off till then, or eternity.

You will if you want to run DX10 games. XP will not support DX10.
