If he can spend enough money to get a conroe system, he ought to go with it. I suppose it just depends on how much he wants to stick to the budget...

Anywho, to cut costs from dethred's rig, I would suggest getting a harddrive with less GB (OP--look at how much you are using right now and decide from there.) And you can also save some money by going with Antec's Sonata case, which already has a 450w power supply. Also, the vid card dethred suggested is out of stock from newegg right now, but BFG is also a respectable company and it has a lower price, especially after the $30 mail-in rebate.

Feel free to try the memory but if it goes bad, don't blame me , as I am fairly skeptical about it. edit: although I don't have the most trusted brand in my system either... 2 of my sticks are from Wintec, so maybe the pqi may not be such a bad idea for budget ddr2

Seriously, PQI is great for the price. I can overclock from 2.2 to 2.6 without touching the ram divider, and it runs fine at 473mhz with 2-3-2-6 timings, haven't even tried 2-3-2-5 yet. Has lasted me over a year now with zero problems. When he's on a budget, is a novice at PC building, and probably won't notice the difference, the choice is pretty clear.

If you are seriously on a budget...the 3200+ is only like $70. But the 3700+ has 1mb L2 and is under $100. That is PLENTY of processor to play BF2 and any other game out there right now. And it has overhead to overclock like a mother. That gives you $100 in your pocket off the other processors mentioned, and you could use that to make sure you get 2x1gb ram.

Of course, if you already have some of these components, you can adjust accordingly.

And I know people will cry about this comment...but if you 'really' do need to save another $100...you can get by with 2x512mb of ram. I use the 2x512mb A-Data kit...just like the 2gig kit I listed, but only 1 gig. I have no problems whatsoever playing BF2. I believe the reason being b/c of the fast SATAII drive is able to keep up with page loads. And that gives you room to go ahead and build your pc and then maybe pick up another 2x512mb kit later when prices come down.

You can get a decent Conroe rig for under $800 after rebates with my suggestions up to the top, which would be much better than a single-core socket 939 system.

And yeah, it seems the OP isn't checking this thread anymore, but I think it still can provide some useful information for people that are looking to buy or people who suggest what to buy on these forums :)
