something close to that others find find things cheaper (yeh the cost doesnt add up, did it thru Arias custom builder so it added £45 to the total)

a 7950 would at this point be a waste of money imo as DX10 cards are proberly around the corner, so even getting a 7900GT should surfice,

AM2 boards are for the new AM2 chips, so replacing the older versions of the 939 etc,

and well honestly i personally wouldnt have a budget of £1k for a custom build as if something went wrong it would be an expensive mistake, my 1st custom build only cost me £450 :)

I don't see why you're against AMD and Intel; the x1900xt is an absolutely amazing card and is pretty cheap now. It looks like you're getting a high-end computer, so Intel would also be the better choice there. You honestly don't even have to spend that much. An e6400 costs about $250 or so here in America and, with some good memory and air cooling, can be overclocked to be faster than AMD's $800 FX-62. You can look at some results here: http://anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/sho...spx?i=2802&p=8 And keep in mind they only have the 6400 overclocked to 2.88ghz. Many people are getting them up to 3.2 or 3.4ghz

I love my ati. But I would have to go with the 7900gt if I was building/buying right now. They're a hundred bucks cheaper than the comparable x1900xt's!

As for the dual-core, it's toss up between price/performance. AMD has a more mature architecture--I still remember when the first pentiums came out and couldn't properly add 2 and 2 (that was back when a math co-processor was teh d4m b0mb). I'd be sorely tempted by the Conroe cpu's, but until these chips get out there in everyone's hands, and get to be a year old, we won't know what sort of problems they might have.

On a side note, my sincerest thanks to all of you out there who are paying thousands of dollars to beta-test my future Conroe build.

I think nVidia/AMD is going to be just as fine (and possibly more stable) than a Intel/ATi, and it might be cheaper too, but just a little slower on current and next-gen games. Beyond that, my guess is that current Conroes will hang in there a little better, but we're talking three years down the line.

For the case/psu, I wholeheartedly reccommend the Antec Sonata II:

BECAUSE the cooling is super (you have to take out the CPU/gpu exhaust vent, though), and it somes with a very good quality Antec 450W psu. The case is also very quiet--if you get a zalman aftermarket hsf combo for your CPU and gpu you won't hear anything above a hum at full load. The case is very well laid out, with side-mounted hd's, rubber grommets everywhere that metal would otherwise touch metal, and slide-in optical drives.

There might be better prices out there, but all of those products are really good quality and it fits your budget. And megawhomper, the cheapest 7900gt at that site was £159... The cheapest 1900xt is only £20 more, and is way ahead of the 7900gt in terms of speed. The 7900gt is not the competitor for ATI's x1900xt... honestly I don't think there is one. I have to say that i agree with megawhompertoo - I think i will stay with what i know is safe (especially considering the amount of money involved) until ATi & Intel have proved themselves.

I forgot to mention that im not really into overclocking or modding - that is a bit beyond my reach at the moment.

Knghtwhosaysni - your links dont work - they just redirect me to totalbf2.com - thankyou for tryin to help anyways and i hope that you can solve that problem with the links, im sure that whatever you have suggested is good and i am thankful that u kept it all in budget.

I am not going to get socket 939 b'cos i know it is dead technology. Would people recommend AM2 - apart from supporting DDR2 RAM - are there any other benefits/downfalls?
Is it uncompatible with certani processors/GPU's etc?

Considering Intel has the vast majority of the CPU market share (70% or something like that) and ATI is the leader in discrete graphics, I don't know how they could prove themselves any better. Many people have ATI cards here that work without a hitch. Same with Intel processors. Same could be said with nvidia and AMD, but there will always be a couple dud parts, no matter what the brand. Honestly... Intel really goes conservative on the ghz on their CPU's to make sure they work perfectly.

I suppose if you really don't want the best parts for your high-end computer, then sure, go ahead and get nvidia and AMD.

however - microsoft's windows os dominates the computer world, even though, when we are being honest, macintosh's OS is FAR better.
