THat's also deceptive. The x1600 is a very mediocre card. Sure, you get the OPTION of turning on SM3. But you couldn't run SM3 at any kind of decent res or AA/AF. Unless you're willing to plop down enough cash to go full on x1800-1900/7800-7900-ish with ~2gb fast RAM, and a modern processor, forget about SM3/HDR (unless you just want to put a "SM3" compatible sticker on your Lanboy).

I find no evidence to support your claim whatsoever in real world terms. Show me info and real world benchmarking (not 3Dmark scores) where the new mid range cards best their previous generation higher end cards. Under some games (Half Life 2 era) the 6800GT runs even with a 7800GT, so I doubt a 7600GT is going to best it.

Sure, the newer cards are running newer shader models and the like, but that takes a while to bleed through to actual games. I'd rather play existing games well than worry about whether I can in a year.

If you're gonna ask him for evidence, then you have to show your evidence. I see nothing other than hearsay in your post (which isn't true anyway). Any card where the last 3 digits are bigger is merely a coincidence, not a rule of thumb. If you are looking for evidence, google "7600gt vs 6800gt," and you will get a myriad of results saying the 7600gt is a better card.

As for the OP's purchase, his was a better buy than yours. I spent the same amount as you (150) on a 7600gt, which is a quicker card than the x800xt pe.

Him first. I've seen all sorts of benchmarks for each card, the 6800 beats the 7600gt in quite a few environments, but there's nothing conclusive.

My rule of thumb with the 3rd digit is correct for new cards - i.e. a 7300 is bested by a 7600 is bested by a 7800 and in most cases this works inter-generationally. There are exceptions, but it helps answer questions by people who ask "is a 9200 any good" or "should I buy an X1300 or a 6600GT"

Show me 6 real world benchmarks of current games supporting your claim re: the 7600GT besting the X800 XT PE. I'm dying to see. FYI my card is AGP as well, and I doubt you can find a better AGP card for the same or less.

I agree with both of you halfway.

Normally the mid level(top of the mid levels) new generation is "close" to being equal to last gens top end models(not the TOP top...bottom of the top). Close being the operative word, and not always.

I have an x800xl 256mb(similar to 6800gt perf.). Someone asked me about the 7600gt in comparison so I looked it up.
Sure enough, the 7600gt was better in some cases, but not in others.

Alltogether it became apparent that it obviously wasn't enough of an upgrade from my current card. A few fps better in this game, worse in others? No thanks, I'll wait.

You're both right to a degree.

Yeah, kind of the crux of my argument. Newer games using newer shader models and the such are going to be better than an older card that doesnt have the shader model implemented. In contrast my X800XT PE will blitz any nVidia card in Farcry, as an example. And maybe even COD 2.

Ok lets see the 6800GS being in line with the 6800GT and even a little faster:
                BF2

                FEAR:

                Quake 4:

                Prey:
                http://www.gamespot.com/features/6154118/p-4.html

                Midrange GPU performance:
                1280x1024 HQ
                7600GT: 49FPS
                X1800XL: 47FPS
                x850XT: 45FPS
                6800GS: 43

                Call of duty 2
                http://www.gamespot.com/features/6140517/p-3.html
                6800GS: 25.8
                x850xt: 21.7

Can't find any far cry benches with the 7600GT and x800xt

x800xt besting any Nvidia card huh? Even the 7900GT and 7900GTX not the mention the 7950GX2.

BF2 is the worlds worst program for benchmarking - why do you think its rarely used in reviews. And LOL, you happened to pick the two other games coded to suit nVidia cards.

I'm referring to an X800XT PE, and yes its beats those cards in Far Cry.

The small difference between a 6800GS an X1600 in BF2 was interesting tho.

I used the X850XT since it is better than the X800XT.

I think it is best to compare most popular games and newer games for benchmarking. Don't even get started on 3dmark2005 or 2006.

Dude, I'm referring to an X800XT PE. "PE". Its rare so theres not a heap of benchmarks (it was too expensive to produce in decent numbers), but similar performance to an X850XT PE (note the 'PE' again) and it surpases a 6800 Ultra by a decent amount. PE is like the difference between GT and Ultra for Nvidia cards, and then some.

                        Re: Radeon X800pro?

First Of all, most X800PRO Pci-e benchmarks are run @ stock, so i dont give a goat about those results.

X800PRO's are notoriously known for their overclock abillity and most of them(PCI-E) can hit the higher 500's and some in the 600's.

Not only that, But the AGP Version of the X800PRO is known for unlocking to 16 Pixel Pipes with a simple bios flash and still clocks well.

10 bucks more for a card that is basically the same (beat it in some games, and lose in others) with no HDR. no thanks.

if u got money go with x1k series get up to x1900...awesome card for ultra high setting is unbeatable AA
