I agree with you that a faster CPU will give a better FPS, there is no doubt about that.

I never questioned your response to him. I simply explained why the GPU is the bottleneck and the CPU is not [normally] the bottleneck.
That graph was made using a single PCI-e GeForce 7800GT. As you can see, a S939 A64 3200+ is about all you need to max the videocard out.Comment

Enlighten yourself by looking at that graph above. There is a .4 (read: point four) FPS difference between AMD's relatively weak 3200+ and it's flagship (as far as clockspeed goes) FX-57.Comment

Isn't it obvious? The videocard cannot processes the instructions that the more powerful CPU is sending to it. Here's the definition of a bottleneck;
"A bottleneck is one process in a chain of processes, such that its lmited capacity reduces the capacity of the whole chain."
The GPU is limiting the capacity of the CPU by not being able to processor all of the instructions that the CPU sends to it.Comment

Not just because its an AGP, its because his CPU is disproportionately powerful compared to his graphics card.
Basically, your CPU 3500 right now is roughly even with the GPU, so getting a stronger CPU wont help much, as the GPU is the limiting factor anyway.
A better idea is to get like you said, a 7800, and then get a weaker CPU. The stronger CPU would only improve performance if you also got a stronger GPU.
One thing confuses me.... that graph with running BF2 at 200 FPS on high quality? Is that possible? I thought there was a cutoff at 100 FPS.Comment

I say he keeps his CPU and upgrades his videocard. He should only need to upgrade his CPU when he upgrades to a 7900GT.Comment
