    Will I Bottleneck?

    Hey Guys,

    I currently have an
    AMD 64 3500+
    Asus A8V Deluxe Mobo (AGP)
2 Gigs of Corsair XMS DDR 400
    2 74 gig Raptors in Raid 0
    and EVGA 6800GT 256mb

    I'm upgrading to a 939 AMD X2 4600+
.....will I bottleneck at all because I have an AGP card?

    I'm almost positive you will...

not the fact that its an APG card but the fact that it's no where as powerfull in its class as that CPU is
    _____

Is this decision final because it seems like a poor choice for gaming

Yes, it would help but you would definitely bpe bottlenecked. If I were you I would get a weaker CPU then maybe upgrade your video.

deffintly... you'd get a much better performance out of say a 3800 x2 and the best APG GPU you can affoard over just than CPU

Does your mobo even support the X2's?

No you shouldnt have any bottlenecking issues, you wouldnt see any difference.

Will I see an improvement in preformance at all?

And yes it supports the x2....just need a bios update...which I already have

                  I don't see why you wouldn't

The performance probobly won't be noticable because you have such a week GPU compared to that CPU but still... it will help you a little

                  Still not worth it:|:

I was trying to say you wouldnt see the difference between single and dual core, unless you are running a million background tasks. Yeah like the previous poster said, you will see a small increase in performance but that will be down to the faster processor.

                      Yes, you will bottleneck.

And contrary to what the guys said above, you will see 0 (read: Zero) performance increases in games. That's the point of a bottleneck, it doesn't leave anything available.

Why would his sytem bottleneck? where would it occur? He doesnt bottleneck now and he has enough ram. We said that he would see a performance increase because the dual core chip is faster, in terms of raw Mhz, than his current single core chip.

I believe that Flanker is trying to say that his GPU will not be able to take advantage of the raw power from the processor.

                            Re: Will I Bottleneck?

Then that is not a case of bottlenecking, the AGP bus speed & FSB is the same speed so why would that have an effect on GPU performance. By jumping to dual core there isnt enough depreciation in memory bandwith to impact GPU/AGP bus performance. Dual cores do suffer a 10% fall in memory bandwith compared to single core processors, as I said before this isnt enough to impact GPU performance. I have read somewhere that AMD has altered the hypertransport to compensate for the initail drop in bandwidth.

An example of bottlenecking is, having a graphics card that is way to powerfull for the system, the system bus can not transport all the data quick enough.

Motherfo's system (single or dual core) will run his AGP 6800GT flat out, without swallowing up all the system resources.

Upgrade to a 7800GT AGP instead, it'll help in terms of performance.
