Well, after leaving it for 9 hours and then cleaning it of dust I found something interesting, the GPU doesnt have its own fan, it only has a silver grill over the top, after I loaded the system up now its been on for about 5 mins without going into anything but desktop the temperature of it is now... 68 Degress C, to increase cooling ive even gone and taken a PCI card out of my system and kept the open slot to allow for venting.

Oh, one odd thing, since I upgraded my Nvidia drivers from the old ones that came pre installed on my system to the newest ones the nvidia information used to show that my card has 256MB's RAM (the correct amount) to now 128Mb's.

Oh, now its been on for 10mins and its at 73 Degrees on desktop!

That's way too hot my friend, and some of the older or low-end vid cards have 'passive coolers' which means it has no fan. My reccomendation is this to you, get a cheap new ACTIVE cooler, a nd if that doesn't work, i would just upgrade your vid card, as it's not really worth spending 30 bucks for a VGA cooler for a crappy VGA. Or better yet, just buy a new vid card at the start.

I just played battlefield for about 1hr 30mins and using Rivatuner's hardware monitoring (just for monitoring im not overclocking anything) when ingame my GPU temperature maintains a solid 97.0 Degress C with a 1 second spike to 98.0, after 4 mins of just being on desktop the temperature has gone down to 80.0 C.

Does anyone know if running at 98.0 is safe or is the card melting?

I think the maximum is 186 F before the damage occurs to the Silicon material of the chips itself.

I use a window air conditioner to maintain my computer at 26 C (The card runs about 43, CPU about 50), I sometimes wear my winter jacket during gaming but here where I am we are seeing 110+ F heat last several days and at least the next week.

NO, 98 IS NOT SAFE. 98 is already over 200F, you really need to do something, for now, open up your case (if you havn't already done so), and if neccesary, get a fan next to it (not a computer fan, a big fan).

Oh boy, thats a problem then, after running a C to F convertor it should be 85.5 C that it starts the damage so thats way below the 97 C that the games run at.

Is it possible for the damage to occur without any visible signs or graphics errors as everything appears fine except when i look at the temperature of the GPU.

If you are seeing no problems ingame, which I would expect you to see at 90c then it could be that the temperature sensor on your card is malfunctioning.

Lol, just because you see little or no effect IN GAME, doesn't mean much, it's f*cking killing the card fast, for me, i would be worried if my GPU goes above 70C (and it does in China, which is why i'm getting a GPU cooler and some case fans, till then i'm leaving case open).

uh...that sounds bad....try opening the side of your computer...thats what i did cause my ati 9600 pro was overheating...:)

Oh my god I have a 6200 PCI and it operates 40 degrees stable. Your card is nearly boiling!

Running at 97 degrees is certainly not safe. I'd think it would break the card. Maybe your temp sensor is malfunctioning?

You have a good PCI Express slot, lucky. I'm limited to wimpy PCI. Instead of buying a heatsink for a 6200, abandon it and get something in the mid-range 7 series.

I totally agree. That temp is wayyyyy high for idle. I would not OC a video card without proper cooling.

I lost a fan (croaked) on 5900XT, and went to buy a replacement.

I found for a few dollars more I could get an NVcooler from Arctic Cooling.

Here's the specific model that fits 6200's.

NVSilencer6 (Rev.2)

You'll have to remove the heatsink(s) by applying some heat with a hairdryer and twist it/them off. Also you'll need to clear some room below the Vcard itself if there's another expansion card in the way.

It's pretty easy, you just need to be careful removing the heatsinks from the ramchips and GPU.

Since the Vcard was OEM, there might not even be a "stock" fan set up that fits the board's configuration.

The NVSilencers work well, and exhaust the heat to the exterior, so there's less heat build up in other areas inside the case.

Save the heatsinks and reapply them with some thermal glue rather then paste, if you need to have the computer serviced. I'm pretty sure adding the cooler will void any warrantee you have on it.

60 degrees is like the standard temp for vid card, Ive actually set my PC to shut down if the card reaches 100+ degrees. Mine usually idles about 65 on bf2 and about 50-60 normal. I'm running a 7900GTX 512 card.

Is there a software utility that allows you to monitor your GPU and CPU temperatures in game sort of like fraps and FPS? One taht works with SLI would be a bonus.
