hit the the windows key between the alt key and the ctrl key. move your mouse over "run" and click it. type:

dxdiag

in the little white box. now press enter.

voila: processor, gpu, memory installed...all the basics...

It has an AGP slot.

Best AGP available is the 7800gs for $270 after rebates, or an x1600pro for $165 both at NewEgg.

If you wait a few weeks or a month, prices should be going down.

X1600 isn't much of an upgrade (and I generally like ATI). Yuck.

If you could find an x850xt or an x800xt (or a 6600gt 6800 series) on ebay, that would probably be your most economical route to getting nice framerates at a good resolution with medium/high eyecandy for an AGP system. I WOULD NOT dump alot of money into them, though.

Caution: Do not drop $300 on an AGP gpu. If you want to play games on fairly high, spend $130 (at most) on a new 6600gt, 6800gs, or (for a LESS than a hundred bucks) a used x800xt or x850xt (they are getting very hard to find new at a decent price).

If it was me, and if I had ~$600 to spend and wanted to play on medium high, with a decent resolution and good frame rate, I'd go with something like this VERY NICE, 64-bit refurbished HP (i don't normally reccommend buying pre-assembled, but this is an exceptional deal on a fairly good brand with great components):

This combines one of the best CPU's of the last generation with the BEST GPU of the last generation, and gives you a nice new hd and opticals to boot...

...and BOOM: you're playing BF2 on mostly high for LESS than $600; still room to drop in 2 more gigs of pc3200 (LATER) without sacrificing the first two sticks of 512mb, and room to install a new, next-generation GPU if you decide to upgrad again.

You have GOOD (not great, but good) components in both of the two other systems you mentioned, but this would make for the best playing experience, without migrating parts (which you said you were reluctant to do). I strongly suggest you learn a little about how to swap a MOBO, install a CPU, what a "jumper" is and does, how to replace a hard drive/optical drive, reinstall windows, etc., though. You can't beat the deals that you can get if you know exactly what hardware you need and/or want and know what the limits of these components are.

Best of luck to ya', and make sure you get some folks' advice before you drop more than a hundred bucks on a component that you don't know much about!...Else you may end up broke...and p1ssed off...

new mobos may mean a whole new computer. they come with price tags too.

i think you should really read up on computer stuff. i was in the same boat as you with not knowing wtf anything is in computers. pci, pci-e, agp, sata, ddr vs ddr2 vs sdram vs rdram... get what i mean? i never looked @ the cache in the cpus or vid cards, or the bit rates and what not. then my hd failed last week.

with in a week i educated myself through research about computers, and decided on the buy i wanted. im running a 2yr old system so im agp for vid card, and my mobo only supports ddr ram so my investment in upgrading this computer is likely going to remain in this computer (unfortunately but meh).

anyways, its pretty easy once you get the gift of it. i even get to whole socket ordeal on the mobos now. i feel like an dumby admiting that i didnt know these things before but now i do and i feel a bit smarter lol. actually i have a confession to make, i really feel dumb because i took 3 yrs of computer engineering and knew more about seriel port pin placements and demux, bi directional and multi chips ect ect.

so back to the point, getting a new mobo may not work out because if you want to bring over old hardware, im pretty sure you wont be able to.

i guess overall the best thing i can advise you to do is open that tower and read the writing on the ram and everything. type in those codes and google them. read about what your running and youll know a little bit more.

If you want to move components, you've got a fairly modern processor in the lga775 board. I'd rip that out, along with your sis' ram (give her the 2x256 or 4x256 if they all fit, and take the 2x512mb), and put that into a new (LGA775+pci-e+SATA) mobo, inside which ever pc case has the best power supply (psu).

If you need help looking for a mobo, go to newegg and search for lga775 mobo's that support pci-e and SATA. Post back if you need guidance on which one offers the best performance, price/functionality, or combination of both. You should also verify that your psu is up to snuff (at least 300W for an x850xt, more for a higher end--7800/x1800, 7900/x1900--card).
