Yeah, do wait for DirectX 10 instead.. with $3,500 you can get A LOT of very good parts, but I also wouldn't spend all of it entirely on just a PC. Just from my experience, I've had problems with my ABIT motherboard, Thermaltake HSF for my CPU, and a Gainward video card which died. Windows Vista is around 5 months away, which will ship with DirectX 10.. the new 65nm AMD CPU's, ATI's R600, and Nvidia's G80 (Both DX10) should be released before the end of the year or shortly after. Also if you go with AMD for your new build, go for an AM2 socket since it'll be good in the long run.. AM3 CPU's (quad-core, DDR3, 2007) will be compatible with AM2 sockets from what I've read.

-- Wait another 2 weeks for the Core 2 Duo processors, and get a E6700 (2.67Ghz, 4MB L2 cache).

-- For the time being, but a GeForce 7900GT KO ($290). When the GeForce 8800GTX comes out, sell the 7900GT KO and buy that. You seem to have the money, so...

-- Come back in a week or two and we'll help you build the rest of the computer for much less than your budget. I guarantee you that if I do it, it will be less than $2500. Unless you want to empty your whole budget on other things as well.

I hope people have noticed that the whole computer world is on a building hiatus right now, haha. I know I haven't designed a new computer in about 2-3 months. It'll be good to start again after Conroe comes out, stretch the old designing muscles a bit.

Well start off getthing a

-Case ( What ever you want )
-PSU ( the new ocz 700WATTS )
-Hard Drive (Western Digital 150gig 10,000k rpm or get 2x of those)
-CD-Rom ( anything that supports CD-ROM,DVD-R, DVD-RW)
-Sound Card ( X-fi witch ever one is good for you )

And then wait for all the good stuff to come in a couple of months ...
This will keep you busy and not go buy something you will regret in a couple of weeks after
I suggest wait a couple of months when windows vista and all the good stuff start appearing..

Definately DO NOT get a 7950GX2...there are so many problems with them and ITS NOT EVEN WORTH IT NOW!! He can build a decent computer now if he wants it and later upgrade to DX10/Conroe..even tho Conroe is out VERY soon

Or...he could wait for Conroe to come out in less than a week, and get a 7900GT KO SC for the time being, and play games at 80FPS until the G80 comes out, and then upgrade to that...

Yeah...Nevets that means nothing until you know what kind of/how much RAM that benchmark was done with...2 gigs of RAM with a 7900GT on BF2 Will run all high EXTREMELY smoothly...period.

um conroe is being released on the 14th of this month....the release date was moved up....Conroe IS the future. and they are CHEAP. Build a Conroe rig and save yourself a thousand bucks and buy rims for your car. Don't wait for a dx10 card those won't be out till 07

FPS in benchmarks are never supposed to be taken as what you will get in real-world gameplay. Duh.

And the 7900GT overclocks to better than 7900GTX/X1900XTX performance.

I agree with most of the advice here.

Except the AlienWare poster.

Build it yourself. Worse case scenario if you get confused bring all the parts and manuals to your local realiable computer shop and have them finish the job for you. It will still be below the mark up for any AlienWare type builder.

Don't spend it all either.

I had a $2200 dollar budget this March and only spent $1500 and change (comp listed below).

I sort of built at a bad time, the 7900 was only a whisper and the Conroe was the same thing (if even that). Bad luck for me, but imagine if I had filled the Asus Deluxe up with and FX proccessor and 2 7800's rather then a single Vcard and the ClawHammer?

I'd be very reluctant to switch the whole mobo package out for a conroe, with that much invested in it.

Even though you may wait for the Conroe the same thing could happen to you. Build a really good rig, that's got room for expandability. Not an insane rig that's you'd be reluctant to change anything about it.

Use the extra money for a high quality display, with a max rez of 1600x1200 or more. Personally I think higher resolutions look better then lower ones using higher AA and AF settings. Lots of people build killer rigs or even very good ones, and become limited to 1280x1024 resolutions (or widescreen equivilants), because of their monitors.

Maybe if you leave the 7900 GTX and X1900 XTX at stock speeds. Comparing overclocked to stock really isn't fair.

That being said I really think he should get a lower priced card like a 7600 GT. No point in wasting another $150 on a 7900 GT if he's getting a DX10 card soon.

The 7900GTX doesn't have as much overclocking room as the 7900GT, they're using the same chip. It's like processors - a high-end processor uses the same chip but can't overclock proportionally to the lower-end processors because the chip that they both use nears it's limit.

What you're trying to say is the same as saying - "Saying a overclocked Opty 165 is better than a FX-60 isn't fair since you can overclock the FX-60 too."

Value and Performance. Why didn't you get a FX-62 instead of a opty 165? Answer that and you answer your own question as to why he should go with a 7900GT KO SC over a 7900GTX.

I agree with that statement also. It's not fair to compare stock to overclocked as far as it's performance, but value is a different story. As you can see in your quote below you only state performance:

I never said he should get a 7900 GTX. I don't think he should get any of those cards if he's not keeping it long. It would be stupid to buy a high end card with DX10 so close to release. 7600 GT FTW.
