Buy an ATI chipset only if you love to RMA products.

Intel chipsets certainly are a little more complex than AMDs "anything with the right number of pins will work" approach.
In case anybody is interested I just ordered the rev304 Bad Axe today which should arrive in about a weeks time, and this supports Conroe :). So maybe I will post you guys some pics while I sit on my hands waiting for the CPU to get here. In case you have never seen a Bad Axe it has 3 PCI-e x16 slots, although they dont all run at that bandwidth :p

Well we have yet to see how it will go so until one is released we cant say for sure, but in the past it has always been wise to use Intel chipset for Intel CPU.

It would help this thread a great deal if th O.P. would list his current motherboard. The reason people ask for help without listing vital specs eludes me...

Thanks, my bro in law has been down for a couple weeks. I've been busy with real world adventures...

He's only 15 so I've been taking him on his first real roller coasters, fishing, bungee jumping, and skydiving...

We still need to go to Tennessee to get some illegal fireworks.

What chipset does your mobo has??? like someone said, not all socket 775 mobos even support the 805, also you might need new memory if you want any intel dual core, if you dont have a 925 chipset or newer, some 915 have ddr2 but not all some still use ddr.

Wow, i really didnt expect to wake up and find this many replies!

On the subject of Conroe, thats really not bad at all, i thought it would be A LOT more expensive.

I was going to go ahead and try and overclock my current processor earlier, since there are alot of people who claim to have been able to hit 4ghz easily on stock cooling. Little did i know, Dell locks their BIOS.

So my motherboard is one specifically made for dell i guess, since thats the only logo i see on it. Chipset 945.

With that said, thanks for everyones input, but i'll be stuck with this PC for awhile.

All 945 boards should support Pentium D.

Ya but if the BIOS really is locked the 805 will be a dead duck at stock speeds.

Yeah, but it doesnt seem to be a worthwhile upgrade, and saving the 100 bucks towards the Conroe and a motherboard seems like a way better investment.

Yeah, if you plan on getting a real upgrade a Conroe and motherboard would be the way to go. Glad to see someone with some patience and reasoning.
