I'm wondering if it would be worth it to upgrade from a P4 HT to a Pentium D processor? What inspired this thread was an Anandtech article on the new Conroe processors, that stated that a Pentium D 805 processor would cost around 90 bucks after the Conroe is released. This is extremely tempting to me, especially after hearing that the 805's are monstrous overclockers. My main question is, if it is a worthwhile upgrade, would i need to get a new mobo?

I don't think you need a new mobo (not a intel expert lol), but if you do need a mobo, i suggest you wait for conroe to come out, as conroe should have a huge performance increase.Originally posted by spyro415 -

The 805 does clock well but it will be hot, and require some decent cooling. Dual Core will only really be a benefit to you if you multi-task. Also you should say exactly which P4 you already have so a better comparison can be made.Comment

I would say to keep your current proc. Its down at the bottom end of the current P4s so maybe you could overclock it a little to improve performance if you think you need it. The 805 has less cache per core and P4s like cache, so in a single core application it would probably run worse clock for clock.Comment

There are already in existence some 975 boards that will NOT work with Conroe, so please do not buy one assuming that it will work, check first. Conversely I think ALL 965 boards will work as that chipset is only just hitting the market.Comment

Yes both NVidia and ATI will be releasing chipsets for Conroe, the ATI set looks quite appealing however neither of these will be available at launch as far as I know. A problem facing NVidia at the moment is that until they get their chipset out there is no support for SLI on Conroe. Intel 975 boards support crossfire, but can only be made to support SLI with driver hacks.Comment

not all 775 boards/chipsets will work with an 805 either. Intel's socket 775 is much like AMD's socket A. It lasts quite a while and runs many different CPUs but the chipsets limit you a great deal.
For example a i915p can't run any dualcores, let alone almost nothing out there currently will run conroe.Comment
