Lets just say i (and my family, especially my dad), doesn't believe in buying used products, even refurbs. A couple days before my dads birthday, i quickly went to ebay in search for a coffemaker, i bought a refurbed one for like 60 bucks less than new, when i gave it to him for his birthday, he really like it, when i told him it was refurbed his mood changed QUITE a bit. He didn't tell me to return it, but he wasn't too happy when he found out it was a refurb. Ever since i've never bought a refurbed/used product.

Funny thing is, refurbs go through more testing than a brand new product out of the same factory/distributor.

New stuff gets basic inspections, possibly actually tested briefly. Refurbs are rebuilt and fully tested by comparison. In many cases, they can be better.

There was a short story on the news recently talking about this, that was their conclusion. Made me rethink my ideas about refurbs...

I don't regret buying s939. At the time it was P4, AMD 754 or 939...a no brainer. Also, in relation to AM2, s939 is 97% effective.

So basically we should be ignoring s939's fate relating to AM2, and focus only on Conroe, which was precisely what Flanker was getting at I think.

Yea s939 is dead, but no regrets here. My mobo was only $80, I feel bad for you guys with the really expensive mobos.

For what I have gotten from s939 in the 13 months I've had it, and the several(possibly 4-8) months I plan to keep it from here...means I would have been buying a whole new comp by that time anyway! At the very least I would have gone from my 3200+ to a dual core of some type in s939.

The ram being the only part that screws all of us current AMD users. But we all experienced this going from AGP to PCI-e. This time it was the ram instead of GPU.

Is there another hardware change awaiting the "next" CPU, besides the mobo?

Yea, it's ironic, eh? But my dad hates em, ever since never bought one, so what can i say... Anyways, now i gotta decide, if s939 is still out, i'll buy that whhen it's mid august, so i don't have to dish out 80-130 bucks on a mobo, if they don't have s939, i'll go for AM2 if the prices get really cheap, or Conroe otherwise.

Yep. There's no reason to even consider the Athlon 64 CPUs anymore, they're so outmatched. K8L is a topic for another day. For the next year, it will be pure Conroe. Remember when you had to pick between the Pentium 4 and the Athlon 64? Well, the decison is about 10 times easier this time around. You were able to get an Athlon 64 or Pentium 4 of the same performance for roughly the same price. Not so with Conroe. Not only do the low-clocked Conroes outmatch the highest-end A64s, but they also do it for a fraction of the price.

S939 went the way all technology goes. Its nothing new. Better stuff comes out, and you can't keep upgrading forever. For those of us that have it, great. But AM2 is something that should never come up in a discussion about a new computer. Ever. I mean EVER. Not only will Conroe dominate it from the very beginning of it's life, the Conroe will continue to do so for the rest of the life of the AM2.

You will need DDR2 memory in addition to a new motherboard, if you're considering going with Conroe and upgrading from S939.

SOME refurbished items. things like blenders, or whatever he bought his dad arent. CPUs and such I THINK are, but if you send one back to newegg if you dont like it, I do not know if they test it.... that is why they have a used item disclaimer.

and as for new CPUs, they test for stability.

Are all the S754 CPU's also being discontinued? My friend was wanting to upgrade his CPU because his is very crappy(AMD Semp.@1.4Ghz). He cant go to AM2 because his gfx card is AGP. So will some still be produced?

Sry, the way i wrote it "no" can mean both ways. So are they going to be discontinued?
