Hemm no that's not entirely true. I bought a pc in 2001 with 1GB of DDR PC2100 ram, back in those days no games used 1GB but when HL2, Doom 3 and co. came out I didn't have any extreme loading times or stutters. I used that pc till 2005. So I'd have to agree with bitvomit, it's an investment.

        exact mat by razor gaming.
with this set up i run every thing on high settings.
is your computer even seeing all 4Gb? what Os are you running? I believe only the 64bit XP can see all 4Gb.

also to the original question, I sit idle at about 350Mb of usage and jump to 1.2Gb when I start the game so if you only have 1Gb of RAM you'd have problems. going to 2Gb will help you A LOT. just make sure you get good RAM.

edit: Also if you have an AMD processor do NOT go with 4 sticks of RAM. it will slow down the speed at which the RAM runs. if you've got the money buy two 1Gb sticks. If you've got a Pentium then this doesn't matter.

so how many years before it was needed ? 4!! when windows uses anything from 100-400mb, its kinda obvious that 1gb was needed for a games pc. if vista uses more than 500mb only then will you be needing more than 2gb. its ok to be abit ahead of whats needed, but 4gb most definatly isnt needed not only that but many pcs will only see 3.5gb out of 4, it shows that theyre currently not designed for 4gb and nor will anything be programmed to use that much.
2gb will likely be the amount for gaming pcs for several years yet.

it sees just over 3gig im running xp pro,
ill go over to the 64bit os when more programs come out that suport it as at the moment theres not that many for what programs i use.

your saying 2gb will be the amount for any gaming pc lol,
read up on most of the new games that are coming out most of the recomend 2gb but its not the max settings on most of the new games.
you say 2gb ive noticed abig difference going from 2-3 on bf2 im always nearly first in the server every time depending on what connection other players have.
bf2 alone use's 1gb as standard an windows use's just over or just under 512 from what ive read in various forums,
an bare in mind that bf2 since the 1.3 has got major memory leeks.
but with the 4gb comment its not really needed at all for gaming,
i use my 4gb as i do hell of alot of multi tasking an encoding an it comes in great when i need it.

Wow, this thread went crazy. It started with a guy asking if he should buy some RAM, and now everyone is arguing about the benefits of different amounts of RAM. Who freaking cares if some dude put 4x1GB sticks in his computer? Who cares if someone else put 4x2GB stick in his computer? It doesn't really affect you in any way.
If someone is really concerned about the pros and cons of RAM sizes, then they should do some research from a reliable source, not rely on the opinions of someone in a forum. So don't worry if someone wants to say 4GB>3GB, or someone else argues that 2GB is the max needed.

I don't want to rant, but seriously.

:edit: It's all moot anyways. He bought the RAM.

well that's why you didn't notice a difference when you went from 3 to 4Gb.

As for programs, vista will probably be out before anyone makes 64bit XP programs at this point. I know there's tons of drivers out there now for stuff but program wise, I don't know what you've got so I don't know if I can help there. The guy I work with is running the 64bit and hasn't had any problems finding stuff. I think he found a message board with a lot of good info on it.

im usually first with 1gb... but i run lower detail textures. fps > eye candy.
windows here uses <200mb after first boot, if your using 500 then youve got too much stuff running.
note your mem usage before loading bf2 and then when playing, alt tab to taskmgr and look at the total ram being used, its very unlikely to be over 2gb. more like 1500mb with high textures.

and your wasting alot of ram cos windows cant use it. but really there is no current benefit for havin more than 2gb, yea you'll use it if you buffer vob files to ram but thats about the only time.

what other games need 2gb ?

I agree extra ram makes loading faster, but that is ALL it will do. And how much faster? Mere seconds...literally only seconds faster...

Are a few seconds worth spending an additional $150-200 on? I think the main issue with ram requirements we are discussing here relate to how the ram affects gameplay, NOT loading times or fps(just in case someone brings that up).

As far as gameplay goes, 2GB is more than enough. And the other game besides BF2 by the way is FEAR. Not as bad as BF2, but FEAR does make use of more than 1GB from what I have read.

That makes a whopping 2 games in existance(1 of them a year old already)...and still nothing else needing more. That is how I conclude we are at least 1-3 years away from "needing" more than 2GB.

And by that time, I certainly hope no one here is still using their old comps unless they just bought one. But specifically, the people generally asking these questions ARE running old machines even by right now todays standard. The older P4's and Athlon XP's for example.

If someone invests an additonal $150-200 on the old P4's or AthXP to have 4GB instead of 2GB...they screwed up big time. They could have bought a new mobo/CPU for that money which would far exceed the non-existant "benefit" of having 4GB.

But you're right, I don't know what the hell I'm talking about.

Why are we not reliable sources? You are always welcome to open up performance monitor and task manager to see exactly how much ram your system needs.

People keep forgetting that Vista is on the horizon and it's gonna change PC gaming considerably. Anyone with 2gb of ram or more is prepared for DX10 imo.

unfortunately what you all are forgetting is that you CAN have more than one program open at one time. so if BF2 is using about 1Gb of RAM that only leaves you 1Gb for the OS and anything else that might be open. AIM, virus, firewall, system monitoring... so you can easily see better performance with more than 2Gb of RAM.

Great point. People have forgotten that with gobs of memory you have the freedom to keep as many programs as you want open and alt+tab between them freely. Wanna play BF2 while winamp, firefox, aim, virus scanner, firewall and mIRC is open? You need tons of ram. Not everyone needs to multitask but once you get used to it you won't go back!
