Dont forget, the speed of the ram will also be a big factor. You wont see the same improvement from 1gb Pc2700 > 2gb pc2700 as you will with 1gb PC3500 > 2gb PC3500. Timings too.

He should go for PC3200, as that is the minimum neccesary for AMD s939 mobos. If you go faster than PC3200, then the only good thing is if you intend to overclock your CPU, as PC3200 is cheaper, and runs with better timings.

I can attest to this..I was having these problems.once joining game and trying to select kit to use and squad,I experience horrible lag.It would take a good 30 seconds or so to finally start playing. Then when I would click QUIT,the game would still run for a good 5 minutes after I am back to desktop.I had to go into Task Manager and manually end task for it to stop.
                So I went from 1GB ( PC3200 DDR400 CL2 ) to 2GB (PC3200 DDR400 2CL ) and now this game plays properly.Very happy upgrading the RAM even tho is costed me just over $100.00

You guys are forgetting to disable your swap file. With the swap file disabled you can eliminate stuttering even at 1gb of RAM if you have the proper settings in BF2. I play with all high settings. Here's my system:

                  3Ghz P4 with HT
1Gb of G.skill mixed with my original 512mb stick of compaq ram
                  XFX 6600GT 256MB
                  X-Fi XtremeMusic

Here's a link detailing the procedures to disable your swap file: http://www.windowsitpro.com/Article/...499/24499.html

You realize not a single program(not game) on the planet with the exception of Studio Max etc., need more than 1 gig?

Besides those massive graphics programs, you aren't using those additonal 2 gigs...EVER! As for BF2, those extra gigs have only decreased loading times by mere seconds at best.

More than 2 gigs is for professional 3d programs and people running servers only. Hopefully you apply to one or the other.

Original poster: 2 gigs will definately help BF2 greatly with the only possible exception being if you currently run on all low settings.

Someone barely able to play the game with their current CPU/GPU won't need the extra gig because they can't change the other settings that make use of the more than 1 gig.

Do NOT disable your pagefile for any reason. Despite what many others claim, you need some pagefile.

Here is another that says it can be done...but also admits and points out the possibility for errors.

Regardless, the consensus is that even if it won't hurt your system, it provides no performance gain anyway, so why risk it? Don't do it.

Unless your PC is only used for BF2 or you are very comfortable with windows and can easily manage a reinstall of it, I would not do this.

There are still a number of applications that request or even require a page file just to run, Here is another article about it from the very same website quoted above... http://www.windowsitpro.com/Article/...035/42035.html

Not saying there aren't benefits to disabling the pagefile just that its a pretty big risk to take if you want your system to handle all types of appliactions not just games...

i disabled my pagefile a few months back when i got 2gb of ram, never had a situation where more than 1.5gb is use in one go which suggests that its not actually necessary to have a pagefile with 2gb of ram unless your into video editing etc...

as for performance gain, i used to be among the first half of people in a server but since i lost the pagefile i tend to be among the first 2/3 :)

it will increase performance since read/write speeds for data stored in RAM are much quicker than speeds for data from the pagefile stored on the hard drive. This makes sense since the hard drive is a mechanical object which relies on how fast the drive can spin to read data whereas with the RAM the process of reading data is purely electronic.

I've been running without a page file for a couple months now and have not "nuked" my system yet due to having it disabled. I only run games and my browser on this computer. I assume that most people don't have a need for programs like photoshop and those that do will still see the enormous benefits from disabling it for BF2. I'm well aware of what programs require a page file or an enormous amount of memory to run. My Windows XP is actually alot faster and more responsive than it ever was when I had 512MB of ram and a swap file. If I re-enable the swap file then it gets all sluggish and nasty again.

You don't need your pagefile period. BF2 crashes for me occasionally because I ran out of physical memory but I only have 1.5GB of ram while BF2 uses 1.3-1.5gb of memory. Those that have 2gb and more will have no problems with their swap file disabled. In fact, keeping your page file disabled will increase the longevity of your hard drive. Constantly swapping data into your page file because you're always out of memory (people with <1gb that browse alot, spyware victims, gamers etc) wears down your hard drive over time.
