    Re: NEW Physics Card

I do know that ati's working on a crossfire system with two x1900xt's for graphics and a x1600pro (or higher) slaved for physics. If ati has it, it's a safe bet that nvidia's working on something similar.

God, can you say 3 graphics cards? I think my wallet just died.

I cant wait untill the day someone makes a game, where you start off in a nice tidy city, got to war, and level the place in the proccess.......crap everywhere.

Also, both ATI and nVidia have announced 3 card solutions to do away with the need for this Physx card...they're doing their own version of it to be 100 times more powerful using mostly current hardware.

okay 1. 3 card, means an extra card, which is the same as buying the Physx card. this will also open up new Physics API's, cerating more lame frenzy, and Sli users being able to do physics on some games, and Ageia users being able to physics on others, instead of everyone doing everything.

              2. 100 times more, is a lot.

              3. most games for the Physx card arent out yet, and the ones it uses so far were poorly implemented, yes it descreses FPS a little, but not TOO bad. GRAW just failed I admit.

              4. even if Ati and nvidia did a 2 card solution (crossfire, sli) and DID NOT do a 3 card version, merely a 2 card like theyve been saying A. it wont be as/more powerful than the Physx, because you are then utilizing a card for physics, and that means there is less GPU power (onl 1 card), which in turn drops the FPS, which in turn means the SAME EXACT problem as the physx card, because people complain about how its dropping the FPS. and actualy it would probably be worse, because instead of giving the GPU a little more to render, its just fully taking a card away. gg.

                Re: NEW Physics Card

I am a believer in that Aegia should've waited until the gfx technology caught up with what was going to be rendered due to physics. Because if the gfx technology was where it's supposed to be at to run the physics gfx, and Aegia came out with it, I bet a lot more people would have a physx card.

Now, it's getting pretty bad press, i.e. fps drop, so don't buy it just yet

If it was later, there wouldn't be an fps drop, just a really cool special effect that would try and sway everyone to get one. No decrease in performance.

                  Re: NEW Physics Card

Graphics cards have programmable shaders, it isnt too much of a stretch to imagine them being programmed to do physics. The chips already do some processing with H.264 video and DVD etc...

Physics will take off when it can be incoorperated onto video cards, that means an enormous already existing installation base, and with SLI boards selling very well, it means that older cards can be switched over to 100% physics mode and a second main card added in.

Eventually the end game in a few years will mean multicore GPU's on a single PCB, with all of this done in a nice tidy package. But for now we will have multicard designs for SLI and SLI+physics etc....

The Ageia has the unfortunate position of being a startup, going up against two much larger competitors. In 6 months or less, competing solutions will be on the market with 10,000x the install base. I just dont see how they can compete. Unless GPU physics is completely underwhelming with its performance, or if nvidia and ATI insist on this 3 PCIe x16 slot BS (frankly i think its laughable they are pushing this crap, it can only be a short term solution in my mind)

Nvidia and ATI can screw this up, but I dont think they will. Physics on the desktop is a two part equation. Getting enough hardware out there to warrant building it into games, and pursuading game developers to incoorperate a specific physics API into their game. One flavor, 2, 3 or 4 potential physics API's by my count. (Havok, Nvidia, ATI, and Ageia)

ATI and Nvidia will have the install base, manufacturer support and the money to see this through to the end. They might be a year behind Ageia in getting support from developers, but I bet alot more developers are willing to jump on an ATI/Nvidia bandwagon than an upstart.

Ageia looks to be in the position of 3dFx glide... but without the success and massive "street cred." The party could easily be over before it even begins.

Retiring an old $200+ graphics card and slaving it to physics is much more economical than buying a $200 physics card brand new with questionable support in the future. Thats my take on this.

So many cards in your system what about that brand new sound card! Computers are going to start running out of room for all these expansion cards, I mean 2 video cards, 1 physics card, a sound card whats next a smell card??

I read in a science magazine in my physics class a month or two ago, that Kodak is working on getting smell onto pictures. They are figuring a way to capture a certain scent, then get it converted into (this is where the smell card comes in), electronic signals which can be interpreted into a smell. The computer would then print the picture with those smells.

Kinda like the Matrix, isn't everything electronic impluses that our brain interprets?

So, then why couldnt we have smell in our video games? or touch? why couldnt we figure a way to plug ourselves into a game, and control everything just using our mind? Instead of seeing what goes on in the world, we sit in our computer chair, plug in, and see everything in 3d, as if it was happening in real life. We move our arm mentally, in game our arm gets moved, etc.

                        Is it possible? why not?

This is where I think games are headed. Sure, it may be 15 years down the road, by I believe it is going to happen.

I pray that doesnt come, you think people lose their life to games like WoW, imagine that. it would LITERALLY be their life. the point is, people are getting carried away with new, stupid things, and we need to just imrpove what we have.

the physics is a good idea, but if everyone just had a dual core processer we wouldnt need it as much (sorta).

You use one CPU for gaming, one CPU for physics.....

yeah, thats one thing. AMD has announced that its trying for things like an 8-core processer, where a core would be used for physics etc. but I mean all we really need is two, unless you wanna render a movie, while gaming or something lol.

Ageia and their Physx processing units arent mainstream yet, but look out... soon enough they will be.

Its the next big thing, remember the first 3d graphics card? This will have the same eventual impact.
