I perfer the Mx510/518 they are good for gaming and have two side buttons for browsing websites and are good for binding TS/Vent keys and when you fly you can switch views easier.

dead on, the MX518 marble mouse is awesome! you can get it for $30 or $40 from newegg and it has mad buttons. Very accurate as well

Until laser mice lowers in price generally, optical is still the baseline. Only the hardcore or the very rich gamer can afford a good laser moues right now. Not all of us are lucky enough to snag em on sale. Plus, laser is a good and noticeable jump in performance, but frankly, it's maybe 1 or 2 kills more here and there. My little sister still uses a 209 dollars Microsoft explorer mouse. Yes, the huge chunky thing that was amongst the first released for optical mice. And it still works darn well for her. Even I don't dare cross her when she's on DoD and on the other team.

Wireless isn't bad. My old mx700 never had any lag. Zip. Nadda. None. Lag problems is done. Though wired may give you that nanosecond edge... it's a nanosecond. It's an edge that you will get so rarely it's kinda silly to use that as the reason you buy a corded mouse. If you game, and you find a cordless mouse more useful for you due to desk space, or the habit of walking away from your computer to use it as a media center, buy one. Don't twist your judgment over a super rare event that will happen once every several months.

Although that nanosecond, if you game professionally does count. But I'm only speaking for the average user.

Always go into mice knowing how much you want to spend, not what you want. Laser is expensive. Why? Cause my own Razer Copperhead killed my pocket.

The Logitech MX510 is absolutely the mouse with the most priceworth, the best feel, best functionality and best appearance! I still use (though it's updates have been many) and it's probably the best buy to my computer I've ever made :).

From a technical POV(putting money aside) there are only two choices IMO, the Razer Copperhead or Logitech G5 (or G7 if you want to go wireless )

They have built-in increased sample rate, something that you previously would need to do with a hex-editor in usbport.sys or by tool that patch the file automatically. The tweak I'm talking about, was published by RaZieL soem time ago.

What this means is that instead of using standard USB sample rate of 125 Hz, Copperhead can use 1000Hz, meaning a sample every 1ms, instead of every 8ms. (G5 and G7 can do 500Hz). Before this, nothing new has really come to pass in the different mice over the years, just new mice and increased marketing.

This alone is one reason why I would never use the MX1000, besides it is wireless. It just isn't what it is hyped up to be IMO, and repeating "LASER" in ads, really doesn't change it just was just like the other mice, but in new coating and marketing.

MX1000 can only do 125Hz, because it is limited being wireless, and wouldn't benefit from the tweaking of the usbport.sys file. It actually uses same lense as MX310 and MX510, so it wasn't anything new at the time, just alot of hype and very good marketing.
(the new G7 doesn't have that limit, but still can only do 500Hz/2ms like G5, compared to the 1000Hz/1ms)

I understand that many ppl like their MX1000, and in thread like this ppl will often recommend what they are using, MX1000 or other, and say it is the best or similar.
That is why I never look in threads on a forum for advice on hardware like a mouse, because ppl judge how they like to feel and handling of their mouse, and often put the technical perspective aside.

That being said, tech stuff and all, how you like to hold the mouse is just as important. I prefer Razer mice because of their lower profile, instead of Logitechs "ergonomic" design, some would feel the complete opposite, and prefer Logitech's design.

Best advice when getting a new mouse, it to not look in threads on what is best mouse, because it is clouded by other people's bias on the subject.
Go and try the mouse out for yourself and see how it compares to other mice, both how it handles and feels, but also look at the tech specs.

Razer has always been the frontrunner in innovation in mice, that is noticeable how much Logitech copies their features like on-the-fly-sensitivity, which found its way to the MX518, after being stadard on Razer mice for a long time. For a more cheap solution look for Diamondback and MX518, instead of Copperhead and G5.

I think gunny hit the nail on the head. If you can find someone who would willingly let you borrow the mouse your about to buy, that is a big plus. I borrowed my current mouse from a friend of mine for 2 weeks before I finally went out and bought it.

I actually came on here looking for reviews on mice (not the earlier stupid arguements against each other) and Gunny makes some very good points. I actually have a Logitech G7 and I'm not really happy with it (this is just my personal taste folks). I have a problem when you first put the battery in, the mouse will move a little faster than normal and as the battery wears down, you find it moving a little slower. It's affected my gameplay on several occassions so I'm looking for something new. I may move back to the MX700 I had, it was a really great mouse when I played SOF2. I think I like the weight of heavier wireless mice and the G7 is so light that it doesn't give me the tactical feedback I like. I'm a "low-sensitivity" player so I'm not bashing the G7 at all - it's an awesome mouse but I think I need something a little heavier. How heavy can you make the copperhead with the extra kit? Anyone know? I'm getting tired of changing batteries all the time too, so it may be time to move back to a corded mouse. Any thoughts are appreciated!

Id look into getting the Logitech G5. Its basically the same design as the G7 except wired and instead of a battery, it has a wieght cartridge so you can customize the weight to suit your needs perfectly. I just think that it be kind of a hassle to have to unscrew your mouse open just to put a weight that you had to buy extra in.
