If you have an AMD dual core you need to install the AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual Core Processor Driver for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 Version (exe) 1.3.1:

and the Windows dual core hotfix:

You don't really have to, though if you are having problems its good just to install just to see if it'll work.

i use a duel core CPU although the major increase in game performance came for my graphics card and RAM so the CPU alone will not increase performance much (for games)
