Any one using them and are they worth it ? Has anyone played BF2 both with and without dual core and was there a big difference ?

It will provide a very small difference in current games like BF2. But overall system performance will increase, and if you run background apps while gaming it can help.

In the next 1-2 years we will start seeing more multicore aware apps, and games, so its sort of an investment for the future, but wont help much now.

I'm in the same pickle, im a hardware whore and WANT a dual core, but my 2.6ghz venice is faster than what i require and i just cant justify $300 for something that might make my already blazing computer a little "smoother" lol

Yeah, I've got an AMD Opteron Dual core chip & 2GB ram. They overclock like champs. Unfortunately, the game doesn't seem to like running w/ 2 CPUs. After a fresh reboot, the game runs OK for a while. But after a day or two since the last reboot, the game runs SLOWLY. Even the splash screens. You have to switch to task manager and disable the CPU1 in the affinity tab.

On the plus side, switching between apps is a breeze. You can leave BF2 running in the background while you do other things and you can't even tell.

Recommended.

I can already have appz running in the background while I play BF2 without any problems

Tax man - if you are having problems do you know you have to flash your bios (which is a dodgy thing to do anyway) before you install the chip ?

Unless you do alot of heavy work, like Photoshop, Premiere, Vegas, mapping, modelling, browsing while on teamspeak and playing, and such, you won't need dualcore. A 2.4 and upwards CPU is good enough for the basic gamer.

You dont need any hotfix for dual core, Microsoft released a patch which fixed the affinity problem, unless you havent updated your OS (which would be a stupid thing not to do) then it should work fine.

Ive been runing dual core no problem makes things a lot smother when running multipal apps.

I like my dual core, I have nothing to compare, since I used to run BF2 on a 2500+ non 64 processor. I will say thouhg, I like using the dual core, since I can run a virus scan and burn a dvd all while playing. It's a wonderful, low usage but wonderful none the less feeling.

I'm sure the next gen of games will all abuse the dual cores. Hopefully Battlefield 3 will make use of it.

If you have an AMD dual core you need to install the AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual Core Processor Driver for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 Version (exe) 1.3.1:
