Well I don't want to debate that, there's good arguments on both sides. We won't get anywhere anyways, our quarreling won't change how they overclock in the end. But with a Conroe hitting 4.7Ghz (despite high-end cooling) I have to wonder how they overclock even if they are cherry-picked :) That said, they don't need to overclock. The 2.4Ghz E6600 at stock will be more than enough to handly that 2.8GHz Opty 170 of yours

Well my panties are all wet from this talk. Does anybody have a link to comparitive Conroe performance v prices for the different models available? As always it will be something of a balancing act and goodness knows we all want "bang for buck".

Well I guess the weapon of choice is either the 2.13 or the 2.4 does the cache size rate as important on the Conroe? I remember on A64 doubling the cache only bought you a few percentage points of improvement.

The cache is one of the reasons Conroe is faring so well. Get the 4mb version.

On cache, I'll just say this much,

Jofaba went from an A64 3200+ @ 2.8 Ghz with 512kb L2, to an Opty 165 at the stock speed of 1.8 Ghz with 1mb of L2 cache, and saw an increase in performance, even though it's 1 Ghz slower (I do realize that the opty is Dual Core).

Cache does jack sh*t on the A64 platform, relative to the large performance gains with Intel. If anything it was the dual cores... IF ANYTHING. Not to knock Jofaba too much, but hes a self proclaimed n00b when it comes to computers, he had about 1,000 problems building his system and is still not satisfied with its performance. I would take anything he writes with a hefty chunk of salt.

Doubling the cache on a Athlon 64 leads to a .1Ghz performance increase (in performance terms, not actual clockspeed). So like twsmit said, it doesn't do much at all for Athlon 64s.

For Conroe, we don't really know yet. More cache almost definately raises performance, but we don't know by how much yet. Theres no way to even guess at it as its a whole new architecture. In the Netburst architecture (Pentium 4s), they were really starved for more cache, but it may not be the case with Conroe at all. Conroe is like the total opposite of what the Netburst was, so its possible that more cache doesn't affect it's performance.

But that doesn't change the fact that it has a huge amount of cache. Yea, the cache IS one of the things that make it amazing. We just don't know how MORE cache would affect it.
