Is that the same area Wreck was talking about?I think those pesky little hot power regulators are in the same place on all 7900gts or is this something unique to evga?

Oh blimey im starting to miss my geforce 6200..

I believe that's what it is. They overheat and cause the problems. like I said in my previous post, put a fan on it, and/or put a ramsink on it and your good to go.

Well guys I stuck a ramsink on the power regs and had a fan blowing directly on them and things went a bit better.

I can play bf2 on 1280x1024 with settings maxed out for about 30mins until it goes bonkers...I suppose its an improvement on 3 mins lol.

I applied the ramsink with a firm pressure for a minute and made sure it had good contact but it doesnt seem to get hot like i expected...its one of the bfg sinks which I cut down to a small square shape.

It looks like I'll have to RMA the 7900gt and pray I get a decent one next.

Cheers for all the help peeps.

BTW if I try to underclock my card (as a last ditch attempt} would the manufacturer be aware of this when it gets returned ?

I would RMA it, also you mentioned at one time that the DVD drive would not reconise your BF2 disc??? how about MB drivers?????? more info about the 79GT issue below.

Yeah it read the special forces disc ok for a few days then didnt recognise it...stuck in bf2 vanilla and its ok with it.

As for mobo drivers I let the gigabyte site scan the motherboard and a short list of needed drivers popped up to download,so im assuming drivers are present and correct.

I cant link to that site you've got there,i think its down at the mo...would love to read it and find out whats going on with them pesky 7900gts,can anybody give me a rough idea what it says?
