Have you checked both ends? The same thing happened to me, the mobo header was keyed but the floppy drive wasn't, once I managed to reverse it, it worked fine.

Using a floppy for bios updating is not very reliable.

Its often the only way.

Also needed for installing SATA drivers.

I borrowed a floppy drive but this time the light that stayed on before does not even come on now!

Using a floppy for bios updating is not very reliable.

Up until maybe 3 years ago, the only option for updating a PC bios was a floppy drive. Contrary to what you wrote I believe that a floppy drive is probably the most reliable method of flashing the bios.

As for the OP. You probably have the floppy ribbon cable in the wrong way, its very easy to do, just double check the ribbon cable and power cable are in the correct orientation.
