The truth is, this will always happen, back and forth. Who the hell cares? Everyone uses AMD, they own 70% marketshare on retail computers, big fricken whoop. Eventually it will turn the other way again, and then 2 years later, back again..........
I don't see any flames, I just see a nice discussion going. Thats what the hardware section is about.

I don't see how anyone could rub my face in anything about AMD vs. Intel considering I own machines that have both processors in them? I'm just giving everyone information as I get it so they can be informed and not brainwashed by marketing.

P.S. The original test set up by Intel was with a 2.8GHz AMD against a 2.4Ghz Intel. I would assume thats why this guy did it the same way. So I'd then ask why would Intel benchmark against a 2.8Ghz AMD?

Imo Victor Wang has problably the best vantage point to make a valid comparison between the next gen cpu's.

For those who dont know of him, Victor is a bios engineer and motherboard designer who works for DFI. (formerly of ABIT) His projects include the recent DFI nforce 3 and 4 boards and he is currently working on DFI's next board which is a conroe board.

Vic is working with AM2 and Conroe as we speak.

^^^Yeah I know Victor is working with what he has, but comparing a 512kb x 2 cache on the X2 with a 4Mb L2 cache on Conroe doesn't seem very fair IMO. Especially on cache dependant tests like Super PI.

You have a valid point. That superPi test is a best case scenario for Conroe.

In a gaming rig I doubt most people could tell if AM2 or Conroe was inside. For that matter, they problably couldnt tell the difference if there was a stout 939 inside. The majority of today's games are gpu limited.

My 939 system is still fast as hell so I have no need to upgrade the cpu/mb/ram. I am waiting to see K8L.

I have an x1900xt so I wont be upgrading that untill Dx10 cards arrive. Guess Im taking a wait and see attitude for now.

My apologies, with every other AMD/Intel thread around here it always turns bad. It seemed like it was going there.

              pffft

When the cpu is out and tested by many hardware sites legitmately and is available for purchase thats when you decide.
Word, call me doubting Thomas, but I don't believe it till I see it. I'll read Maximum PC's review, they seem to be least biased of different hardwares.

How is it Intel's fault AMD does not incorporate more cache on their CPU. Looks to me that AMD is inferior is that what your saying????

Once more that guy is comparing a CPU that has not been release yet, probably an engineering sample, againt's a current top of the line AMD CPU, if someone is to blame is the guy on th blog.

what I get from it, is they are trying to say it is a 20% gain overall, which obviously isn't the case.

His testing so far still doesn't show anything since he can't even OC the Conroe and the ram timings on the AM2 are stuck at 5-5-5.

This whole debate based on rumors and flaky tests is pointless. Stop eating it and wait for some solid information on the new processors.

AMD does have processors with more cache, 1Mb x 2. What I'm saying is at least Victor should do a test with the biggest cache AMD chip available against Intels biggest cache chip. I'm not saying Victor is trying to mislead by using the smaller cache version of the AMD because thats probably all he could get his hands on.

How did you get off on an AMD vs. Intel cache size rant? That has nothing to do with what I was saying. Where am I blaming Intel for the fact Victor is using a smaller cache AMD?

I believe that Intel said a 20% gain is expected meaning it might not all be 20%

then wants the point if you only see a 20% gain in SOME applications and not all?

I dont know, i guess you like your performance to stay the same huh????
Is better to get something than nothing

something is better than nothing, however, you lose performance elsewhere. Is it really worth it to get a small gain in one spot only to lose it in another game/benchmark?

I entirely agree that those threads provide no conclusive indication of anything.

But those threads will problably develop into some interesting information eventualy because of Victor. If I trust anyone's epinion it would be his.

He has always been a source of relevent information due to the very nature of his job. Those threads are merely a point of early interest to watch.

I mean sites like Anand werent even allowed to look inside their conroe box while Victor has conroe and am2 samples actualy in his hands while he designs their boards.
