Quake II RTX Dated for June 6

    What's old is new again.

Nvidia just released the "official announce trailer" today for Quake II RTX, or Quake II with real-time ray tracing for those not in the know. There will be a free release to Windows and Linux users on June 6. Please note that this is not the same as the user created mod called "Q2VKPT."

Vulkan Support Added to No Man's Sky, Promises Better Performance

If there is one thing that is critical to a game having VR support, it's making sure that the base game can run well on capable hardware. A VR experience with poor performance and framerates isn't a VR experience that you want to have. Fallout 4 VR, I'm looking at you.

It's perhaps a good thing then that Hello Games just launched a new experimental branch update for No Man's Sky that adds Vulkan support to the game. The performance gains should be felt by most players, especially...

It's open-source and can be acquired free of charge from the MoltenVK Github page. As a result of this work, Valve announced today that Dota 2 will soon be updated to utilize Vulkan on macOS.

Star Citizen Dropping DirectX 12 in Favor of Vulkan

A posting to the RSI forums states that Star Citizen will drop their planned support for DirectX 12 and will instead focus on Vulkan for their API. This should allow for more operating systems to play the game beyond just Windows 10.
Years ago we stated our intention to support DX12, but since the introduction of Vulkan which has the same feature set and performance advantages this seemed a much more logical rendering API to use as it doesn't force our users to upgrade to Windows

Nvidia Releases Footage of Doom Running on Vulkan API

Nvidia released some new footage today of Doom on the PC running at up to 200fps via the Vulkan API. Of course, you probably won't really be able to tell that the framerate is hitting 200fps, but you can view the 1080p 60fps YouTube video below for a good idea of the performance. Alternatively, you can just look at the video directly through the Nvidia article. And yes, this is running on a GTX 1080 card.

    AMD Reportedly Halts Mantle Development

Mantle, the little API that could is apparently winding down on the development side of things. This is according to AnandTech, who in their review of the AMD Radeon R9 Fury X, says that there are no more improvements coming for Mantle. AMD has reportedly "thrown all of their weight behind Vulkan and DirectX 12, telling developers that future games should use those APIs and not Mantle." Vulkan is essentially the rebirth of OpenGL and was actually initially called the "next generation ...
