Epic and Improbable Create $25 Million Fund to Move Devs Away from Unity

It's been a real rollercoaster of a day for those using the Unity game engine. First, Unity cut off all future support for the online multiplayer platform called SpatialOS. Unity updated their terms of service back on December 4, 2018, and only clarified these changes to the SpatialOS development team at Improbable on January 10, 2019. These changes specifically prevent services like SpatialOS from working with Unity.

SpatialOS is a widely used development toolkit allowed developers to more easily integrate online multiplayer experiences into their Unity developed games. In...

  • System Shock Reboot Project is Back In Development, Targeting Early 2020 Release

The System Shock reboot/remaster/remake is back in active development, according to a report from PC Gamer. This is rather noteworthy because the last we knew, development was halted after they apparently ran out of funding. It was also a matter that the team felt they had diverted too far from the original vision of what they had hoped to accomplish with the remake.

How will things differ now? For starters, Nightdive CEO Stephen Kick said that they are shifting their focus back to what they first established with the Unity demo back in 2016. It doesn't mean that the game is going to switch away from using Unreal...

System Shock Reboot Switches to Unreal Engine

So long Unity, hello Unreal Engine! The System Shock reboot has moved onto the Unreal Engine 4, which should appease those that find the performance on Unity to be a bit lacking.

Developer Night Dive found that "Unity is not a great engine to use if you want to make an FPS on console." This is according to statements made to Polygon by game director Jason Fader at GDC.

  • 3D Realms and Interceptor Announce Bombshell a Top-Down Action-RPG That Totally Isn't Duke Nukem

Hey, remember when Gearbox totally sued 3D Realms and Interceptor over the unauthorized use of the Duke Nukem IP? Remember how that was because 3D Realms and Interceptor announced Duke Nukem: Mass Destruction?

And do you remember how it was going to be a top-down action-RPG staring the title character? Well, it seems as though the two studios realized that using Duke Nukem was a bad idea and have tonight announced Bombshell, a new top-down action-RPG coming from 3D Realms and Interceptor.

  • Red Orchestra 2 Update Adds New Transports, Gametype, Map, and a New Update System

Fans of Unreal Engine titles are already well acquainted with how terrible it is to update those games. We're talking about multiple GB updates even when something super minor is changed. It's the nature of the engine. That is, until now.

With today's update to Red Orchestra 2, Tripwire has incorporated the "Brewing System" into the game. That means that after today's massive 8.5GB update, future updates should be significantly smaller in size, say only a few hundred MB. In addition to this very welcome addition, the update includes a new gametype, new transports, fixes, a new map, and more.

Changelog for Red Orchestra 2 for April 21, 2014

    2 new Transports
    Universal Carrier & Sonderkraftfahrzeug 251 (SDKfz 251)
    Winter and Summer textures
    New Achievements
Transports implemented in 3 maps Arad, Barashka and Rakowice

    New Gametype S&D
9 maps modified to work for SD (4 RO2, 5 RS)
1 completely new map SD-Warehouse (for RO2 - Official Custom Map)
    New achievements
Added a new bind '=' to drop the bomb in the game binding menu

New RS map Maggothill Merrill's Marauders, made up of a series of light infantry assault units (lacking heavy weapons), was ordered to take up position at Nhpum Ga and hold it against attacking Japanese forces in April of 1944. Ill equipped for this holding action, the Marauders were put under siege and often time surrounded by the Japanese. Faced with poor health conditions and limited supplies, the Marauders managed to hold. At the end of the battle, 400 enemy were confirmed dead with 57 dead mara
