  • Building a Better TGN Part 2 - Overview of New and Returning Features

Last week I kind of detailed the process of what it took to even get the site up and running following the upgrade to vBulletin 5.4.5 from 4.2.1. Today, I'll go over some of the new features for all of you members out there, plus some of the more forward facing changes made to the site. I'll try to make this short and a bit more concise than last week's entry. Custom StyleThe most obvious thing you will notice when visiting the site is the current site design. I worked for a long time customizing a site design from one of the default vBulletin designs. Customizations include, but are not limited to:...

  • Building a Better TGN Part 1 - Banks and Technical Issues

As you have probably noticed by now, Total Gaming Network is looking a little bit different than what it was only about a month ago. We are now on the latest version of vBulletin, which just happens to be 5.4.5. We are also on a far more up-to-date version of PHP. We are also on some better server hardware than we were previously. The Boring Technical StuffThis particular version of vBulletin (5.4.5) came out roughly a month ago. We were previously on vBulletin 4.2.1, a release that initially came out in mid-2013. This equates to roughly 5-6 yea...

Hands On with Sea of Thieves (PC)

During the most recent beta for Rare's upcoming high seas pirating adventure, Sea of Thieves, I was fortunate enough to be given a key and test the waters for myself. My first go at the game included two of my friends and a random person teaming up for a four man crew aboard a large and worthy vessel. We collected our supplies from the port at which we spawned. Supplies that included bananas to help us replenish our health if needed, cannonballs to engage in piracy on the open waters, wooden boards to patch up any battle scars on our boat, and ammunition for our weapons. Plus, who could forget the pre-launch celebratory grog that swiftly caused me to lose control over my character as he threw up all over the tavern. It was just another day in the life of a pirate! The sun was shining through some sparse but great looking clouds and the seas were calm. A distant storm could be seen forming b...

  • Counter-Strike Co-Creator Jess Cliffe Arrested for Sexual Exploitation of a Child (Update: Valve Suspends Cliffe)

Jess Cliffe was arrested this morning (February 1, 2018) at 1:17AM (PT) for "sexual exploitation of a child." For those few of you who do not know, Jess Cliffe is a co-creator of Counter-Strike. He and Minh Le (Gooseman) created the wildly popular game back in 2000. It started as a modification for Half-Life and since became a number of very popular stand-alone products. While the police did not provide any additional details, we do know that Cliffe does not have a criminal history. He was booked at 1:17AM into King County Jail. A bail hearing is scheduled for the afternoon of Friday, February 2. As of this writing, Cliffe is still under the empl...

  • Cloud9 Defeats FaZe at ELEAGUE Boston 2018 to Become First American Roster to Win CS:GO Major

Cloud9 has become the first American Counter-Strike: Global Offensive roster to win a Major Championship. Cloud9 defeated FaZe Clan 14-16, 16-10, and 22-19 (2OT) in the Grand Final event that took place earlier tonight. Perhaps just as impressive are the numbers that ELEAGUE pulled in for tonight's event. More than 1,130,000 streams were broadcast at the same time. That has now set a new record on Twitch for most concurrent streams at one time for a single channel. The previous record was also apparently held by ELEAGUE from the the first Major they hosted. I say concurrent streams because there were undoubtedly far more than 1.13 million people watching, especially if people had viewing parties. ...

  • Chet Faliszek Leaves Valve

    Chet Faliszek Leaves Valve

The second half of Old Man Murray and someone that was undoubtedly a champion of our virtual future, Chet Faliszek, has left Valve. Faliszek parts ways from a legacy that stretches back 12 years with the former game developer.

Faliszek played a major role in Valve's Vive VR platform, pushing developers to jump into the virtual whether it was on Vive or competing platforms. Some of his writing credits while at Valve include the two Half-Life 2 Episodes, both Portal games, and both Left4Dead titles.

This departure comes just a few months after his writing partner in crime, Erik Wolpaw, departed Valve. It also comes months after Mark Laidlaw, another major writer at...

    Review: The Turing Test

    It really makes you think.
Bulkhead Interactive has brought the world The Turing Test, a new entry in the every growing first-person puzzle genre. In its simplest terms, the game finds you going from room to room solving a series of puzzles that get progressively harder the deeper in to the game you go. You manipulate what can best be described as portable batteries to charge up objects like doors, industrial sized electromagnets, and more all in an effort to progress to the next room. All of this takes place on a base located on Jupiter's moon, Europa, where it's just you and an ever-present artificial intelligence that serves as your guide and, dare we say, friend? The formula may not sound vastly different from the other puzzle oriented games but it's th...

  • Week in Review: INSIDE, Necropolis, and Battlefield 1 Alpha (July 10-16, 2016)

This week in review will be a quick and dirty one, just like you like it. I'll be taking a quick trip through INSIDE, Necropolis, and offering my thoughts on the Battlefield 1 alpha as it comes to a close.

    INSIDE

INSIDE is the latest game from Limbo developers, Playdead. Playdead played to their strengths in Inside, offering compelling gameplay, puzzles, a visually outstanding experience, and truly impressive audio. True to their Limbo roots, the story in Inside is wide open to interpretation, which may upset those who enjoy a game with a very clear-cut story. Also true to their Limbo roots, the puzzles in Inside are well thought out and never once reach the point of being frustrating. The game took me a bit over three hours to complete without going out of my way t...

    Hands On with Welkin Road

I was given the opportunity to check out the high flying, parkour antics in Welkin Road. Welkin Road is an upcoming Indie game from Gregor Panic that sends you sailing over platforms high in the sky as you try to make your way from point A to point B. Along the way you will have to traverse long distances by way of running, jumping, wall-running, grappling, and swinging.

The game features two modes, one of which is a normal progression mode through the various levels. The other is a pure speedrun mode that challenges you to beat your best times and the best times in the world.
Soaring amid the clouds, Welkin Road blends free running with grappling-hook-powered aerobatics, challenging
