• PAX 09 - Star Trek Online

Atari made a big showing at PAX this year with it's recently released Champions Online, and it's up and coming sci-fi MMORPG, Star Trek Online. Our very own staff writer Dairuka was lucky enough to be given a hands-on demo of Star Trek Online, and he was gracious enough to write up a little article on his experience. Be sure to read up on it.
I'll spare you the Trekkie jokes for the sake of your sanity since I'm willing to bet that if you're reading up on Star Trek Online, they've been repeated to death already. What I will share with you is tale of what space-flight combat should be; Simplistic, tactical, and fast-paced.

From the weakest of beams to the largest of explosions, everything sparkles and shines.

Naturally your entire career throughout Star Trek Online will have you sitting in the captain's seat, but don't let that stop you from being unique in comparison to every other captain roaming in deep space. How you pick your crew will depend entirely on how well you perform in certain aspects of gameplay, preventing you from being just another faceless clone. Each Officer offers a distinct personality, and unique special ability, such as torpedo salvos or tachyon beams, which allow you to customize your style of gameplay with ease. You could be a tactical support player, riding around in an Olympic class ship with a flight crew based entirely around hull and shield regeneration. Take on a smaller sized ship and you'll be perfectly suited for speed, and with proper positioning, very high DPS.

Positioning is perhaps one of the most important aspects of tactical combat in Star Trek Online's space zones. With proper positioning you could launch surprise attacks on ships with relatively poor rear weaponry in comparison to the equipment you can put on the front. Considering it takes a great deal of effort and time to turn around in this game, rear attacks become one of the most effective way to tip the battles in this game.

Better recruit the right crew, or watching your ship blow up will be a common sight for you.

Of course, space battles aren't the only way to play. Throughout the game you will be expected to take part in missions on planets. You'll be given ample opportunities to explore each intricately different planet, and with some effort, even be rewarded with a new discovery.

Party makeups typically consist of five players while beamed down to a planet. These parties could easily be made up of a group of players, but a person could just go solo with four AI party members made up of the flight crew you select. You'll be expected to equip each and every one of these crew members, and with up to 12 crew members to have at any given time, hand-me-down weapons become commonplace as you scale better weapons to your favorite crew members.

Getting tired of space combat? Get scotty to beam you down for a little pew pew action.

While the actual combat is most impressive, what truly helps Star Trek Online to shine is the vast amount of user-oriented customization involved. No crew is ever the same, because it's up to you to decide upon each crew member's race, name, and gender. Even what color shirts they wear. (You can have a whole crew of red shirts, you dirty bastard.) You're even given the opportunity to make changes to your ship allowing you to differentiate yourself from the pack.

Star Trek Online is still in it's development stage, and currently is projected for release sometime in Spring of 2010, but from what I've been able to see and play so far, Atari is looking at establishing itself as the premier source for space action and adventure.

It was definitely one of the highlights during my time at PAX. The game-play is fun and rewarding. I have to admit, I'm anxious to play more of it.

I plan on making my crew wear nothing but red shirts.

An entire crew of Command staff? Risky.

I normally could care less about MMO's but I am very excited about this.
