Well, during PAX our very own staff writer Dairuka had a chance to sit down with Greg Hanefield of Flying Lab Software, and it seems he had quite a lot to say about a newly announced upcoming expansion for Pirates of the Burning Sea and balance. Read on to find out what he had to say!
Q: So what has Flying Lab Software done to improve the graphics engine?

Greg Hanefield: Honestly, not a lot has been changed from the engine, but we've really just put so much time into polishing it, we've just fixed a lot of bugs. We've also put just a ton of time into improving performance. It's really just a major improvement over the earlier versions of Pirates of the Burning Sea.

Q: Now Greg, what has changed in terms of content with Pirates of the Burning Sea?

Greg Hanefield: We've done a ton of tuning for all of our existing classes and our combat. We've even introduced a new class since launch called the Buccaneer. The old Pirate class was a little too constricting so we've decided to split them off. So we now have the Cutthroat, who is a lofty pirate who does a lot of the swashbuckling, do or die flair. Then we have the Buccaneer who is more of a Merchant Pirate who does his best to control the trade routes on the high seas. We've basically done a ton of tuning and testing. It's basically some of the best stuff we've ever done. The PvP right now is so well balanced that the players love it. There are very few complaints about it, it's really big.

Q: So how big are PvP battles now?

Greg Hanefield: Well, you can fight 1 on 1 on the open seas, you can fight 6 on 6 on the open seas, or you can even fight 24 on 24 battles, which is part of our latest conquest PvP system. It's pretty awesome.

Q: So what has changed with the storyline?

Greg Hanefield: We've been trying really hard since launch to give each town their own unique storyline so they all have their own flow and their own flavor. Something that we've recently did in the last six to eight months, is that we've created a huge storyline about Black Bart one of the most notorious pirates in the Caribbean. He captured more ships than anybody else. He was richer than anybody else, he killed more men. He was truly the architect of all pirates. He was better than Black Beard even, if you know of any other famous names, chances are he was better than them. So we created a storyline all about how he tries to take over the entire Caribbean to kind of depose the leader of the Pirate Faction to make it his own. It's the player's job to defeat him to keep him from taking over.

Q: What's next for Pirates of the Burning Sea?

Greg Hanefield: Excellent question, actually, we're about to make an expansion. It's called Voyages, it's all about power, prestige and governing ports. We're going to introduce a huge new political system into Pirates of the Burning Sea, called essentially Port Governance. You'll be able run elections for governor of the port. You'll be able to change the tax rates of the economic goods of that port. You'll be able to upgrade the defenses, and do a lot of things as the Governor of a Port.

Greg Hanefield: We've basically been developing so fast for the last 18 months or two years, that we've actually decided to take a step back to say, hey, lets take a year to create a really cool expansion to really reward the players of the game.

Be sure to check in on TGN later for more information on the newly announced expansion Voyages soon.
