• PAX 09 - Army of Two: The Fortieth Day

A select few people at the Penny Arcade Expo 09' in Seattle, Washington were given a hands-on look at Army of Two: The Fortieth Day during a private party held early on the third. Our very own staff writer Dairuka Sutain had a chance to attend for a hands-on look with the producers at EA, so be sure to take a look at what EA Montreal has to offer!
PAX 09 started early this week, with a hands-on demo of EA Montreal's own Army of Two: The Fortieth Day on Thursday the 3rd of September. Thirty of us were all crowded into a small meeting room located in the beautiful Westin Hotel's North Tower in Seattle, Washington.

Cover remains the most important factor in success or failure.

For those of you familiar with the original Army of Two, you'd remember the stiff controls, and the awkward manners in which the guns would sway while aiming. I'd say it's time we all took the time to counter our blessings, because EA Montreal has learned from previous mistakes and has taken it upon themselves to improve on these gameplay flaws with a vengeance. Controller sensitivity has been ramped up, and the gun sway is greatly decreased when in aiming mode.

Additional features also take what used to be an otherwise bland bromance and turn it into a tactical co-op game where teamwork is greatly rewarded at every turn. Marking targets in your GPS prevents two players from shooting the same guy, using the innovative ally corner camera allows you to see where your ally is taking cover, or who he just recently shot.

Taking hostages is both fun and profitable. You can earn bonuses for playing the good guy.

Army of Two: The Fortieth Day is a fluid action-packed shooter, with a very immersing setting that constantly evolves around you, giving off the impression that the Chinese city is literally collapsing around you. It's up to Salem and Rios to make the right moves, not to save the world - but to save themselves from an extremely dangerous situation that perpetually takes turns for the worse. Of course, throughout the Chaos, Salem and Rios encounter enemies who fail to notice them creeping around. Often times the player can sneak up behind enemies, and with the help of the GPS, discover enemy officers - and even taken them hostage for the sake of defeating entire platoons without firing a single shot.

Weapon customization makes it's return in Army of Two: The Fortieth Day, but players can also expect to customize other equipment in Salem and Rios' arsenal. Players get the opportunity to customize the look of the body armor and the face masks they wear.

Items found all over the place can be used as makeshift shields to protect your team.

All in all, EA Montreal is pulling no stops. They emphasize the importance of choice in Army of Two, from the ability to customize the stocks, magazines or accessories of weapons, to the ability to save or kill innocent hostages for extra money or equipment.

Army of Two: The Fortieth Day is expected to be shipped out on January 12th, 2010 in North America and January 8th, 2010 for Europe.
