We're pleased to bring you today the second entry into Total Gaming Network's recently announced series that is sure to bring back some memories for all of the gamers out there. This new series, which will be known as Classics in Gaming, will feature older games that have iconic and legendary places within the gaming industry. Each month we will highlight a new classic game and discuss what made the game so great and why you should consider playing the game again.

The second game featured in our Classics in Gaming series is TopWare Interactive's Earth 2140. Released in 1997, Earth 2140 was a mostly unknown RTS, and if you ask a gamer to name several RTS titles, Earth 2140 will probably not be one of them This look back at the game is done by staff writer Kieran Manzi. Take a look:
There are always a lot of fond memories of gaming’s yesteryear; all those classic PC games that we loved and played for countless hours, or even those games we had heard so much of from gaming elders that we wished we could get our hands on to see what all the fuss was about. While I will not consider myself a connoisseur of Real Time Strategy games, I will say there was one title that always stood out in my mind. No it’s not Starcraft or Command & Conquer, it is one that many have not even heard of, Earth 2140. Read more...

There's plenty more to rehash from Earth 2140 and plenty of memories to relive so be sure to read the full article here. We'd like to give a big thanks to the guys over at Good Old Games for providing the games for this new series. If this article has inspired you to pick up the game and play it for yourself, you can purchase it for $5.99 at GOG.

Re: Classics in Gaming: Earth 2140

It's got to be Myth the Fallen Lords. It was different from the standard RTS fare from the beginning. No resource management, just a pre-determined set of units and a goal. I never felt that I was overseeing a battle as much as mitigating my casualties. Every loss hurt. It was bloody, and truly strategic. It nearly borders on puzzle-based.

The story was bleak but engaging, and it kept me interested through the end.

    Also: myrmidons!!
If that didn't strike terror into your heart for even a moment, you need to play Myth.

This one is probably going to be mentioned a few times but my personal favorite RTS is Starcraft. I've been playing this game since it was initially released and it can still hold my interest for hours at a time.

The balance, feel and speed at which you kill the enemy units of the game felt just right. All the three different races actually felt unique and yet none of them felt more overpowering then the other two.

The game held up in both skirmish mode and the campaign which was interesting as well. As you went through the campaign you got to see the same story from every races point of view.

The game also featured a incredible map editor for an RTS game, allowing the user community to create not only more skirmish maps but entirely new games in the starcraft world. I must of spent a good deal of my time playing the use map settings maps, such as tower defense or the always fun evolves.

These reasons are why Starcraft even to this day is my favorite RTS and although some RTS have come close such as Dawn of War none have quite topped Starcraft for me.

My all time fav would have to be King Arthur's World for the SNES. Yes i know its not quite a normal birds eye view RTS, but it was my very first RTS game, and i still love it. I played original WC, SC, WCII, and all the other amazing pc games, but nothing else ever had the flavor of King Arthur's World.

Re: Classics in Gaming: Earth 2140

I would like to play Earth 2140 because of the interesting story and game play. I have never really played RTS games in-depth before, so I figure it would be best to start with an older classic. I understand the basic appeals of the genre, but hearing or seeing others and experiencing for yourself are two very different things.

In addition, I really enjoy non real-time strategy games. Starting off unaware, slowly building your troops up, growing more and more aware of enemy threats, planning a risky devastating move, successfully pulling it off; it's just exhilarating in other strategy games.

I saw several common sci-fi elements combine into something ridiculously epic, just from the intro. I can't wait to see more of the battles and story. In a war-torn landscape brought about through schisms between factions caused through continued combat over resources, Terminator-like soldiers and MechWarriors fight against more conventional futuristic weaponry, such as tanks and lasers. I swear I heard Koolaid Man saying, "Oh, yeah!" It combines so much awesome all into this one game, so how could I not want to play?

Another Great RTS classic, game was so close to my addiction with Dune I didn't get to spend much time playing, but it would be an ideal game for the weak powered laptop that I've been Traveling with.. and empire earth needs to be put to rest for a while lol..
not to mention this would be great to play, especially as a timekiller waiting in line @ events for PAX..

Anyone from TGN headed that way??

Re: Classics in Gaming: Earth 2140

I missed out on the Earth 21xx series the first time round. This was probably due to the fact it was a little overshadowed by Starcraft and the Command and Conquer series. This would be something I would love to remedy though and winning a code to play the game would be just the ticket to do so.

Other than being suspiciously close to a newer game , I love the time frame. Its far off enough into the distance so there is alot of room for creativity, but still believable seeing as it is in your backyard. I think thats why i liked 2142 alot too, still believable, but there are HUGE margins for ingenuity.
