  • Splitfish FragFX v.2 Controller Review

Our latest review here on Total Gaming Network has staff writer Manzi picking up SplitFish Gameware's newest PlayStation 3 controller, the Splitfish FragFX v.2. Here's the intro to the article:
Just like many gamers on the PlayStation 3 already, you can be fortunate enough to check out SplitFish Gameware’s FragFX controller for the system. This innovative custom controller is designed with shooters in mind and aims to bring some of the essence of PC gaming to the console. Can PC gamers feel comfortable with this hybrid of the PlayStation SixAxis controller and the PC gaming mouse? We investigated and found just how hard or easy it will be for many others who are trying to find the perfect balance between PC and console gaming. Read more...

It's a great idea, one that very well may interest PC gamers into consoles, but I feel that size of mouse is too small to hold 4 buttons on the side and I can see lots of scrambling to hit the right one when you need to fire!

It's a nice idea, no doubt.

However, most people want to sit at their couch and play, because that's basically the whole point behind a console, otherwise you might as well just play on the PC. That's going to be a problem I think.

I haven't tried it myself, but I can imagine it being awkward resting one hand on the mouse and holding the other arm up in the air, or at least resting it on the table, but with the right arm insort of a weird angle, at least compared to mouse and keyboard. Any views on this Manzi?

Also, "thousands of dollars for system upgrades"? You can get a perfectly fine brand new gaming computer that will last a good while for at least $800, or much less if you get lucky with discounts. Just nitpicking here.

I'll wait for a fully operable Mouse/Keyboard experience... Surely it can't be that hard to come up with

It does feel really awkward at first but I found that after awhile you get more comfortable when using it, holding is is not much different as if you had your left had on a keyboard and right on the mouse just keep it in that general area of height and you will feel very comfortable i sometimes held it down to my side when my arm became tingly. But the best way to play is at a table as I said in the review.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

When firing 99% of shooters on the PS3 use the R1 button and the rest the R2 button so by default it is on the left mouse button, and if not you can change it to be. The buttons on the side are somewhat difficult to press the right one if you have larger thumbs or just a bit clumsy, but you can set one of those actions (usually reload, melee, etc) to the fragchuck motion.

Great review. I just wish they had something like this for the xbox. I'd destroy everyone with a mouse in GOW2 and Halo3.

I can't see it catching on for most people, but might be a big thing for competitive play. I think PC gamers don't really have that many issues playing with console controllers, they are not difficult to use, they are by design inferior to Mouse and Keyboard.
