  • Battlefield 1943 Review

Return to the Battlefield that started a new age in gaming. Our latest review here on Total Gaming Network has staff writer Dairuka running, shooting and bombing his way through the Pacific in DICE's newest BF title Battlefield 1943. Here's the intro to the article:
Battlefield 1943's release is a very controversial one among longtime fans of the PC series. The name alone would suggest this is the official sequel to Battlefield 1942; however, the price tag hints we’re to expect nothing more than an arcade shooter that has very little in common with its predecessor. Perhaps this is due in part to the inclusion of a modified version of Battlefield: Bad Company’s Frostbite engine rather than the classic Refractor 2 engine credited for the breakout success of the series. Still, at a price tag of only $15, it’s safe to say that Battlefield 1943 offers many draws to console gamers who, to this day, lacked a true Battlefield game to call their own. Read more...

    To the reviewer:
If you think the mounted machine guns (.50 cal) are bad, you might need to improve your skill... the MGs are killing machines if you can aim.

Great review, I think you covered each point really well. However, I still look forward to this on PC

Im sorry but to me this just feels like a PC biased review? They give the controls a 4/10, whats that comparing to though? Other games on the consoles or the PC? If compared to other consoles i would give the game a much higher score for controls simply for the fact its so easy to pick up and play.

Again the gameplay seems a little harsh to me, 5/10? Its not as epic as your battlefield on the PC i completely agree but bring it down to console level this game has some amazing gameplay elements to it that deserve more than has been credited.

Just seems very harsh for what i think is a great success, and this is coming from a person who played 1942, BF2 for 3 years and BF2142 to this day.

I can't account for the controls of the console but as it goes at the moment. +1 to that review.

As The_Eliminator said, do these controls compare to PC or other consoles? And how do the given ratings compare to say, the regular old Battlefield 2?

            Other than that, great review.

I don't 100% agree with how Dairuka wrote about the controls but I can tell you it is not far off. The game is better control wise then SOCOM which is just terrible and it is about the same as Killzone so I think it's not that bad really. Just like any game it takes some getting use to.

Great review. If I hadn't already downloaded this game, I certainly would after reading that.

I kind of agree with what others are saying though, the controls are pretty much on point in my opinion. The only downside is the sensitivity. For that, I'd ave to give the controls maybe an 8/10. As for the gameplay, I agree with the 5. Replay value is there only due to the fact this is an online-only game. With the few maps they have, the guise of ranking up but not really getting rewarded for it, and the lack of kits as in previous BF titles, the bulk of a truly enjoyable game just isn't there. It's missing a lot to keep my attention. I (and it seems like others on my friends list) have played this game for a week straight maybe without putting anything else in our consoles, but after that new-game phase is over, I feel a little bored with it.

The biggest plus this game has to offer is I don't have to get up and put a disk in my PS3. For that, I give DICE kudos for creating the best pick up and play 1st party shooter out there. Never having to leave my couch and get this kind of experience is worth $15 to me.

                    Re: Battlefield 1943 Review

Nice review. Its good to hear a critical review for a change instead of all the other gaming sites saying almost exactly the same thing. Although I don't necessarily agree with all your points.

First off is the price. Everybody seems to keep going on about how good the price is. To be honest I still think its a bit expensive considering the amount of content. 4 maps, 3 classes, 4 vehicles, 2 game modes, its not a lot.
Take Wipeout HD for example. The have loads of content, fantastic graphics as well as working VOIP all for practically the same price. Also they've just released an expansion pack which is practically a new game (3 New game modes, new teams, new maps, redesigned ships, etc). If they do release an expansion for Battlefield 1943 it'll probably be 4 maps or less for roughly half the price of the game. Not really value for money.

In your review you've given the controls a 4/10. As far as controls go they don't bother me too much. I would say 4 is a tad harsh, maybe a 6 as I am not as bothered about the movement as you are. They dont seem that different to other FPS console games to be honest especially Bad Company.

Graphics are ok. There are much better looking games out there of the same genre. Even for downloadable games there are still better looking games out so I would give it an 8. Looks nice but to give it a 10 your basically saying they're the best graphics ever or best graphics currently available. I don't think this is true.

And finally you've given gameplay a 5/10. I think this is a little unfair. Playing the game it seems pretty tight for the amount of content. Apart from the shocking VOIP problems on the PS3 (although we can now set objectives compared to no alternative in Bad Company) I would give this a 7 because it is enjoyable and the air superiority game mode is a nice change and something I hope they explore a bit more on future battleifeld games.

Overall I would give this game a 7.5. Its a little expensive for the content but never the less its still an enjoyable game and probably the second best game on the PSN store next to Wipeout HD (purely because of the graphics and content in Wipeout makes it the best store game IMO). I would recommend this game to a friend (which I dont think you would if you gave a score of 6.3)

Oh, and they should have included dogtags.
