  • Editorial: Has the iPhone Become My New Gaming Platform?

We'd like first take this time to introduce one of our newest Network Writers here on TGN, yetweallfalldown. His debut article here on the site is an editorial from our ongoing series From the Editors' Desks. Is mobile gaming taking the industry by storm? This question is answered with plenty of evidence to back it up. Check it out:

About two weeks ago I decided it was time to make a "big boy" step and open my own cell phone account. Going into my life changing and wallet draining decision, I knew that I wanted an iPhone 3GS.

My decision was reinforced by the thought of all the cool games I could use. However, now I find that I'm firing up some of games on the iPhone, such as Flight Control, Word Fu and Topple 2, rather than turning on my PS3 or Xbox 360. Well, the lack of console gaming could also be because my TV gets hijacked quite frequently for episodes of Daisy of Love or Charm School. Here are three reasons why the iPhone is becoming my platform of choice.

    1. Costs
As a college student, it has become really hard for me to shovel over my cash for games (I recently signed up for GameFly, which helped). Luckily, some iPhone games cost only $0.99 or $1.99. At times, these mobile games can even give me more game play than the most recent console games that I've played (I'm looking at you, Terminator: Salvation). With these types of prices, I could buy more games than I currently have on both the PS3 and Xbox 360. Continue Reading...

It goes without saying that most gamers also have cell phones. How many gamers have started to play mobile games on phones like the iPhone though? Be sure to take some time to read up and then discuss the editorial by posting your own opinions on this subject either in this thread or in the blog.

I own a iPod Touch G2, but never could I call it a serious gaming platform. There are games I enjoy on it, but mainly touch and click arcade games such as Peggle.

Apart from those, I find the controls too fiddly and not precise enough and the small resolution bugs the hell out of me. Anything like a racing game suffers from the fact that you honestly can't see what is ahead which makes efficient driving an impossibility.

On relations to cost I'm suprised you didn't mention the huge contract you probably had to sign to get the iPhone in the first place

On my ipod touch I love to play SimCity because it is the same as SimCity 3000 on PC. Also Tap Tap Revenge is a lot of fun.

I have an Ipod Touch too, and its user friendliness makes me seriously consider an IPhone when my increasingly eccentric Nokia gets the boot.

But it is very expensive, and that makes me wonder about this

Then why are you buying one of the most expensive phones around, and probably committing yourself for the next 12-24 months to an expensive plan?
I can see many reason to buy an Iphone, but "saving money" isn't one of them.

Btw. I recommend Tap Defence: http://www.runawaysquirrels.com/2009...n-iphone-game/

Actually, the plan didn't end up costing as much as I thought it was since I started a family plan with my girlfriend (who happens to get a corporate discount on the AT&T plans). However, the initial purchase did put a decent dent in my wallet.

I'll definitely have to check out Tap Defence. Thanks for the read and suggestion!
