  • Six Days in Fallujah: Video Games as Art?

TGN staff member Bawdyjane had the opportunity to attend the Triangle Game Conference in North America and sit in on a conference with the developers of Six Days in Fallujah where the developers discussed the content of their game and the reaction it had received for portraying current events.
Recently dropped by Konami due to public backlash, Tamte questioned the decision citing the ability of video games to provide consumers with insight into current events in a manner that passive forms of media cannot. He asked folks in attendance if they are “just high-tech toymakers, or media companies capable of producing content that is as relevant as movies, music and television.”

Yes, I think video games can serve as art. I don't think a serious, realistic game based on horrifying events undermine the original event in any shape or form. In a way, this game would inform while entertaining, and I feel that it should be released, regardless of the outcry.

If people still want to protest, *points to Bill of Rights*, freedom of expression. Even if you feel outraged by something, that anger doesn't give you the right to strike it down. You already have the power to avoid this work, so why don't you?

I have plans of turning a story I'm writing into a video game, oneday perhaps, and I'd like it to be more like a playable work of art, rather than a fun bunny-hop shooter fest.

I think video games are art the same way movies are art.

^ seconded. I think that more games based on real time events should be made.
