  • BattleForge Review

Our latest review here on Total Gaming Network has staff writer Corkum playing through EA Phenomic's card based RTS game BattleForge. Here's the intro to the article:
BattleForge is not your normal real time strategy game; it’s a “next-gen real time strategy game” according to EA. The game positions the player as a “skylord,” a being with the ability to spontaneously create life through the use of the battleforge. As a skylord, it is your task to rid the world of evil with the help of your online companions. It is a game that revolves around fun; I liken it to a game of checkers rather than a game of chess. It does not require great skill or patience to enjoy and once the player understands the basic game mechanics, nearly every game will play out the same; however, extending my analogy of checkers a bit further, just because every match plays out almost exactly the same does not necessarily make this game boring. I do enjoy the occasional game of checkers, but I love a good game of chess. BattleForge echoes this comparison perfectly. I enjoyed the game, but I did not love it. Read more...

If I wasn't strapped for cash, I might have considered this.

Looks like good fun, I do love me a good strategy game.

Perhaps i'm confused or just generally obtuse, but how does that business model work... Does this game have advertising or something?

Also, I don't mean to pick holes, but you missed a huge, huge point that this was one of the first ever DirectX 10.1 games on the market (bar HAWX). You should look at the impact of that, it's a pretty big change that can make the game a lot more playable on ATI hardware than Nvidia hardware!

But, apart from that, the game looks nice, probably not my genre, but well done on the review Corkum

Well I think I can help explain their business model a bit for you; just like with real card games you have to buy booster packs to expand your deck. I would assume that by making the game free they had already started making enough money off of the booster packs that they could afford to give the game away. With regard to DX10.1 I was personally running the game in XP 64. So while I could speculate about the impact that it would have on the sales of this game I would have no first hand experience. Furthermore, I should hope that people don't buy games solely because of the graphics. That trend leads to half baked games that look nice but have little in the way of worthwhile game play.

            Re: BattleForge Review

I'm not saying that the graphics would lead to different sales, merely that in DX10.1 mode, ATI cards would pull ahead hugely in terms of image quality, but most notably FPS as it streamlines the current DX10 instruction sets.

Although, this is assuming it's DX10.1, it said it was going to be. Perhaps you could check the box or readme?

I couldn't find anything on the box or on the user manual about DX10.1.

According to this list it is:

I'm assuming that list is accurate enough.

hmm... i'd be interested to see difference in FPS between an Nvidia card running DX10 and an ATI card running DX10.1.

Well either way now that the game is free there is no excuse to not give it a try.
