  • Empire: Total War Review

Our latest review here on Total Gaming Network has staff writer CaptainKirk playing through American history in SEGA's strategy game Empire: Total War. Here's the intro to the article:
The latest edition in the ever-popular Total War series holds true to the aura of previous titles and introduces groundbreaking new styles and technologies and has been touted by some as “The best real-time strategy of all time.” Does this newfound adage hold true, or has the hype overshadowed technical shortcomings? In this review, I play through Empire: Total War as a complete neophyte to the series and attempt to provide a fanboy-free synopsis in response to the resounding toll of approval heard ‘round the gaming world. That review was pretty spot on. Ive enjoyed Empire a lot and am glad I bought it. It has the feel and action of Shogun, which the others lacked some. Rome is also a good TotalWar game, but Empire has a lot more to offer.

      Re: Empire: Total War Review

I was almost constantly bombarded on Steam chat by other players complaining that their game just crashed when they invaded Portugal (!!).
10/10 on the review quality just cause you mentioned me in there :awes

        Re: Empire: Total War Review

My brother use to play (still does sometimes) Medieval Total War he loved the game and I enjoyed it a lot too. If my PC met the specs I would have gotten the game myself.

          Re: Empire: Total War Review

Good review, I have to disagree with others on this though. Empire, for me, has just played it safe, there is nothing really new or ambitious about the game. Navel battles add little to the game play itself. Researching technology is the only new direction that is really good.
The game is not bad by any means, it just has not built on what the previous titles in the series have done so well, AI is still buggy after all this time. Another thing was a big hype on the detailed animations, the thing is, in most hand to hand battles at any time only about 10 of the units will be fighting, the others will just be standing do nothing around them. The game has a lot of bugs, in the main campaign and elsewhere in the game.
The actual battles are a lot more boring to me, however that may be a reflection of the time period, a simple A vs B in lines against each other. Every battle I have played online my opponent just sits there with a load of arty trying to force me to attack him, and essentially the first one to attack is going to lose a lot more men. There is some in the tactics, however not so much as in M2TW. Again, maybe that is a reflection of the time period, less specialised units and more symmetrical battles.
As I stated, its not a bad game, I just feel frustrated more than anything playing, with a lack of tactical depth, bugs left right and center, its hard to see what is so great about this game.
